The day after Thanksgiving, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods played a largely underwhelming round of exhibition golf and charged pay-per-view customers $29.99 for the right to watch them do so.

Country music singer Jake Owen was one of those customers and apparently took the opportunity of seeing Mickelson at Jordan Spieth’s wedding the day after “The Match” to tell Lefty how terrible he was.

Owen told the story on the “Foreplay” podcast Monday, describing a scene fueled by “a few cocktails.”

"So I walked over to him," Owen said. "I was like, 'Hey Phil, you owe me f---ing $29.99.' I was like, 'For wasting four hours of my life with the s---tiest golf I've ever seen. You guys hype this whole thing up about the big match? You guys couldn't even make three birdies between the two of you? I want my $29.99, and apologize to me for some s--- golf."

Mickelson, armed with $9 million for toppling Woods in the winner-take-all match, was ready with a refund from a wad of hundreds in his pocket accompanied by a sharp retort, according to Owen.

“‘I won 90,000 of these yesterday,’” Owen says Mickelson told him. “‘Take a hundred and go f--- yourself.’”

Mickelson, not one to back down from a challenge, was happy to own the story, confirming that Owen’s account was true on Twitter.

I didn't follow the Mickelson thing much but I don't understand what he did. I read some comments where he was basically saying that Saudi Arabia is a human rights violation cesspool, but they have a lot of money so let's go gets some of that money. And then he got completely cancelled for that??

He ripped the PGA Tour a bit as well. Billy Horschel and Rory McIlroy basically came out right away and said what Phil claimed regarding the PGA tour was false.

You can't really openly admit to taking blood money even for a noble cause (which Phil's isn't) and then have major international brands on your clothes and your bag.

I don't know much about the PGA tour but it's kind of funny that everyone turned on Phil but all the other players basically used it as leverage against the PGA tour to "pledge allegiance" to it.

Well, the PGA Tour came out and said that anybody who jumped ship for this new Saudi league would risk being banned for life from the PGA. For younger guys like Bryson, Rory, Horschel, Schauffle, Justin Thomas, and others who have spoken out against the Saudi tour it makes sense as they are still out there to win majors and set their legacy.

For older guys like Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, etc, it might make sense for them to try and get as much money as they can while they can still play at a relatively high level.

Despite not playing a single round on the PGA Tour in 2021, Tiger Woods won the inaugural Player Impact Program and its $8 million first prize.

Players were notified Wednesday morning of the results from the first year of the program, enacted at the beginning of 2021 to reward the 10 players who bring the most positive attention to the sport. The PGA Tour combined five criteria to rank each member by their PIP score: Google searches; meltwater mentions, which track how often a player is mentioned across global media; MVP index, a measure of a player's reach on social media; Nielsen score, which measures how much a player is featured on television broadcasts; and Q-score, a decades-old measure of an entity's familiarity and appeal.
