Wanted to give my favorite neighborhood restaurant some props after yet another great meal there last night.

Went with my wife and my parents to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday and our contractually agreed upon divorce now that she has reached her expiration date.

We started with the smoked trout spread and smoked peel and eat shrimp for apps. They were out of calamari which sucks cause we always get that. Comes with a delicious thai peanut sauce which you never see with calamari.

Had a cup of the new England clam chowder cause I have to do that everytime I go there. ended up passing the cup around for my mom and soon to be ex-wife to share because it's so rich and decadent.

For entrees I went with the macadamian crusted halibut with a spicy schewan sauce. Came with a potato pancake that was the best I've ever had. My dad had the chopino. My wife had crab cakes cause her favorite Grouper was sold out. My mom had the cat fish with spicy shrimp and cornbread stuffing and topped with spicy hollandaise. For desert we split a piece of maple pecan pie.

No alcohol and the bill for 4 was $205.

Usually end up going here 2-3x per year, but always say I should double that cause it's so good.

For a little history: Fahlstroms is owned by Glenn Fahlstrom, the original owner of Glen's Diner on Montrose. Glen had a falling out with his partner and left that restaurant and opened Fahlstroms (Belmont near Southport) with pretty much identical menu. We followed Glen to his new place as a sign of loyalty and haven't been back to the original since, but I heard it's not as good as Fahlstroms.

Easily the best and freshest oysters I've had in Chicago.

Took Denni$ there after a Cub game. Alas, he doesn't like fish.

I usually get The Crabster. Fuckin' awesome.

I'd be interested to hear what Dennis had and how he liked it. The place has an extensive diner menu as well as the fish menu. I keep meaning to order some of the specials off the diner menu, but it's hard to go there and not get fish since it's so good.

Always the best sign of a good seafood place, they routinely sell out of items and ensure lots of fresh turnover.

"Nobody else has this." That's what Glenn Fahlstrom claims about the burger at Fahlstrom's Fresh Fish Market, a burger weighing in at a half pound of chopped sirloin, with raw onion, lettuce, "poorman's" Thousand Island dressing, tomato, and cheese. I didn't eat the burger at Fahlstrom's. I was there to eat fish, primarily. But the claim about its singularity is dubious, as there's a suspiciously similar burger a few miles north at Glenn's Diner, the Ravenswood seafood restaurant Fahlstrom founded in 2005 and then was booted from after a protracted legal battle with one of his partners two years ago.

Now I know why JORR loves this place.

This is also a further example of why he hates the "So, what do you do," conversations.

Too close to home.

I haven't been to Glenn's in a long time. Too many screaming children. But they did have a strange menu item that was a combo of various unrelated items like eggs with Parmesan cheese, Canadian bacon, orange juice, choice of cereal, and chocolate milk. I ordered it one time.

That sounds like it might be right.
