I have a 2006 honda accord coupe which has 256k miles. I just got a new car to replace it. My wife thinks i'm an idiot for wanting to spend $800ish to replace the timing belt/water pump on the old car. I'm probably at around 130k miles on the current timing belt so i'm already pushing the limit there. There really isnt much wrong right now with the car other than it is old with high miles. I'd imagine it's not worth much more than $1000 (my assumed going rate on the private market for a car that runs). The tires probably have 30-40k miles left on them. just replaced the new front brake pads/rotors.

let it die when the timing belt breaks or have the work done on the car? I feel bad because I still like driving the car. It's a 6 speed manual with a v6 so it still is fun to drive. The main point of keeping it would be I could drive it occasionally to work and my wife could learn stick without worrying about destroying the car.

I guessed at $1000 because the front fender is dented pretty good, there are minor dings and scratches all over. The leather of the drivers seat is ripped. I supposed if it is worth more than my off the cuff guesstimate selling would be an attractive option.
keeping it as a hobby/project car does have some appeal, just with two young kids and a yard and house fulll of items that need attention i dont think id have time to put in to it.

Edit two... i think i gross underestimated the value. it may be worth $2 to 2.5k. This makes selling look like the better option

I have a similar situation. 2005 VW Passat with 75K miles. A/C crapped out. Has a little rust spot. missing part of the grill work. Looks a little rough but rides great.

I'd keep it as a hobby car, maybe go on youtube and see if you can learn how to change the timing belt or water pump yourself. Might be an interesting way to pass time/learn a new skill.

If you can afford it, I can't imagine having a car you realistically aren't surprised when it doesn't reach it's destination because of how old it is. I'm not saying buy a new car every two years but no matter how good a car is it can't be considered reliable at that high of a mileage.

A few years ago my husband made me get rid of my car because of the broken A/C. It was 10 years old 70k. I should kept it.

He's saying 800 to fix, it's worth 1000. Plates, stickers, insurance, convenience, and having a backup car would be the determining factors for me. Of course, if you enjoy driving it, or have an attachment to it, those should be factored in as well.

Do you have a good mechanic? Something tells me that timing belt can lead to a money pit of smaller fixes that run up your anxiety.

I would drive it until the first thing breaks that is over $100. Anything with over 250,000 miles is basically worthless anyway.

I had L grease/tar drip onto my 3mo. old brand new truck and I cannot get rid of a residual yellow streak on my door panel. Tried using Turtle Wax Tar Remover and the grease itself went away but the door panel is still stained yellow.

Any tips or trick or am I fucked and have to go to a body shop?

Take it to carmax and have them assess it as a trade in. They will tell you how much they will pay for it & tell you how much you could get if you sold it privately. I always take a car there before I trade in to see what I can get for trade in, plus they give a no pressure price, so you can take it and go.
