On my third Boxer now. First two were rescues and taught me a lot about the breed. Current one I got as a puppy and while it was a tough first
few years, he finally mellowed out just before turning five. The last year with him has been pretty great other than the fact that he is not dog
friendly. Great family dog. Definitely one of us.
Never grew up with a dog as opposed to my wife. So when we got our dog as rescue puppy I was shocked at the hassle/work/money. The first six months were horrible but now that she's a year I see why dogs are the best. Feel bad that she loves the outdoors but we live in an apartment. Though we send her to daycare daily to let her expend her energy (didn't realize that cost either....)
They can definitely be a lot of work, a lot depends on the breed and its important to try to get something that fits your lifestyle if possible. My dog is
high energy and needs exercise which is tough living in this area for about 4 months or so. It's a whole production trying to get a coat on the dog and
everything. He is not made for the winter. Other anxiety issues have been tough to deal with but I am able to come home for lunch to let him out and
give him some attention during the day. My dog can't go to daycare but if you can do it and afford it, that is a great option even a few days a week.
