Here is how I see the picks:

3. Montgomery- not my guy but I seem to be in the minority. The Bears got a starter and a rare three down back in the third round. That is an objectively good pick by any estimation. He is a good blocker, receiver and runner. He's never going to hit home runs for you as you see on tape that he is regularly being caught from behind (hey, hey). I'll be pretty satisfied with 10-20 yard runs. My guess is that they ease him in with a regular role but Davis is the starter. Davis should immediately be watching his back as he might not even make it to the end of his two year contract with the Bears.

4. Riley Ridley- this is almost universally being hailed as a great value pick. It better be as the Bears are packed to the gills with not only good WR, but WR that match his skills. Amazing the transformation of the position in just one year. I think he is going to have modest production in year 1 as there will just not be enough passes to go around.

6. Duke Shelley- Bryce Callahan reincarnation in size, ability...and injury history. I think he is going to end up being a practice squad player this year as he can only play slot and that is covered by Skrine. His size is going to keep other teams from nabbing him and putting him on their regular roster. If he can play ST, maybe he makes the regular roster.

7. Kerrith Whyte- great pick. This guy makes the team on ST alone. His blazing speed will demand Nagy find a use for him on O as well.

7. Stephen Denmark- off the charts size and speed for his position but right now he isn't an NFL CB. However, I can very easily see him being an awesome ST player and I think he makes the team as well.

This draft definitely put some bigger contract veterans into the crosshairs not for 2019 but for 2020. The Bears have Whitehair and Jackson due for big contracts and if Mitch develops, him as well. Davis, Gabriel, Robinson, Skrine, Mc Mannis all now become cut possibilities in 2020 fit he need arises.

I hate that we got nothing at TE in a good TE draft. They absolutely must find a block first TE in FA. That will happen as teams start to make cuts.

I hate that these chump ass teams took K, P in what I consider to be early rounds. It just doesn't make sense analytically. Unfortunately it hurt the Bears but it was the right move not to jump on one in the 4th.

I also don't like Pace/Nagy lack of willingness to create QB competition. The great Tyler Bray is keeping you from seeing what else is out there, even in the undrafted group. I would have loved to see Tyree Jackson here on an undrafted contract.

I can live with not getting depth in the OL. This is a young group, except for Long. They have their veteran backup T in Lawson and an emerging one in Cowart. They are very young in the middle. I have a sneaking suspicion Heistand will get Bars ready to make the team as the backup G. He was a draftable talent, being a captain and top lineman at ND before a knee injury. Luckily that happened in September giving him 10 months to recover before training camp.

Round 1 (18) Garrett Bradbury C - Immediately becomes the best C in the NFL North, and is an important and necessary improvement in the Vikings' interior OL since it also moves Elflein to G, which should suit him better.

Round 2 (50) Irv Smith TE - Replacement-in-waiting for Rudolph. A better blocker and more multi-dimensional than Rudolph, though he will never be as big of a red zone threat. Wish he was taller.

Round 3 (102) Alexander Mattison RB - Standard modern NFL RB. Won't be an every down back, but can catch passes and be a multi-faceted threat in many situations.

Round 4 (114) Dru Samia G - And here is the other great pick. The Vikings OL should be much improved with Elflein at LG, Bradbury at C and Samia at RG. He needs to get stronger.

Round 5 (162) Cameron Smith LB - Richard Wood...Jack Del Rio... Junior Seau...Willie McGinest....Brian Cushing... Lofa Tatupu... Cameron Smith. The latest in a distinguished line of USC LB's.

Rounds 6 & 7 - Crapshoot, no one cares. They used like 6 lottery tickets here.

montgomery has to be great to make any of the off-season RB moves a net positive to the team.

use pick 87
use pick 162
use pick 2020 4th

Bears chosen path
spend $3M per year on mike davis
give howard away for 2020 6th
use 87, 162 and 2020 4th to draft montgomery.

The same reason shortstops don't want to be moved to third or second.

And offensive guard has always been where you hide your two lesser linemen. Blind side tackle and center are the halo positions.

The value the NFL puts in the positions should be revealed by the money they invest in them.

I don't think this is correct. The highest selection of a C in the NFL draft was at 15 since 1993 when a center went 14. It's also quite rare for more than one to even be chosen in the first round. That seems to be the worst of all OL positions.
