Honestly, who cares? It's not uncommon for the restaurants and stores that offer birthday freebies for the offer to be available for the whole month. Jersey Mike's gives you 365 days to redeem your free birthday sub.

We use our birthdays as an excuse to take a vacation. Turning 37, better go to Spain!

A woman I work with does this. Has plans every weekend for the month of her birthday because it's her birthday month... She will also use 3 or 4 vacation days the week of her birthday even though nothing really planned. Just doesn't work around the time of her birthday.

Maybe it's because my birthday is right after christmas, so at that point I'm over parties/get togethers/etc., but I really don't care about my birthday at all.

I support trying to use your birthday if you can get out of work without using vacation.

In order to avoid an issue with you yesterday, I chose not to celebrate my birthday.

Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year has gone by and how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better self will emerge, with each flicker of the candles on the cake, we know it's not to be, that for the rest of our sad, wretched pathetic lives, this is who we are to the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably; happy birthday? No such thing.

I think it's a comforting realization to know that the day you are born matters far less than the day you will die, and the day you will die is unknown so there isn't a way to celebrate "One year left until I die".

Or you could celebrate being one year closer to eternal life.

Do you guys have those weddings where everyone meets at the local town civic center after the bridal party goes out for dinner?

The classic UP wedding reception at the Elks club.

The best part being that it’s open to the general public after the dinner.

Yes, the idea of some elaborate, expensive wedding reception was foreign to me until college.

It was either cold cut sandwiches at the K of C Hall or roasting a whole hog in someone's backyard.

It was also customary to only give a gift of 10 or 20 bucks.

I think the ones I went to in the UP for cousins were fried chicken. It was a bit different to me but I think I’ve grown fonder of the back yard reception since then. A hog roast sounds like a good solution But I’m picturing one of those 90 degree summer days which are pure joy.
