Growing up, they were a staple of my athletes diet. Not so much these days.

We used to make them at home all the time. In HS we owned an ice cream parlor in Gurnee for a while. I became pretty proficient at making delicious variations on the traditional shakes.

Cupid Candies. Total old school soda fountain type place. You even get a little cup of water when you sit down. Great shakes and other ice cream treats.

The only one I've had in the last 30 years was an oatmeal concoction from Irazu in Wicker Park. It's was damn tasty, but I'm rarely up north.

Steak N Shake will always be a favorite. Some of it is probably nostalgia.

Not like anybody is drinking shakes because the are healthy, but I would stick with the vanilla at Susie's. Everything else has that weird flavor syrup in it. You know that building's footprint, you know they are not sitting on 50 different flavors of ice cream there.

Oddly, although I enjoy their custard, I’m not a fan of Culver’s shakes. Too thick and smooth for me. I like the texture of an ice cream shake.

I like a chocolate malt too. Telegram Sam is right about Susie's. They have a million flavors. My friend always gets a Baboon which I think is chocolate and banana.

There's a place by my house called Lickety Split. Get this, my wife doesn't like it because the ice cream is "too good". It must have too much fat in it.

If you like vanilla, get some Market Pantry (Target brand) vanilla bean ice cream and use it to make a shake. It's deeeeeeelicious.

I get the impression you never eat at home, though.

I think it may be considered "super premium".

I agree with both of these thoughts.

I'm also fascinated by the McDonald's shake-flavored liquid that does not melt.

I worked at a pizzeria in high school.

Some girls in my class worked at a Dairy Queen one block over.

I would take my breaks and bring pizza to the girls at DQ in exchange for a couple of huge pineapple milkshakes.

It was delicious and a great way to suck up to the pizzeria owner. He loved those shakes.

Absolutely. I love the last little bit when it's basically thick milk.

Boozy ice cream drinks at Bryant's in Milwaukee. Drink a second one only if you are not driving and don't mind being fucked by the driver.

I like the Portillo's vanilla shakes.

Back in the ice cream parlor days, a couple of great ones were:

Chocolate shake made with chocolate covered almonds in chocolate ice cream.

Standard chocolate shake, but substituting New York Cherry ice cream for vanilla. The chunks of tart Bing cherries is awesome.
