To me, I see it as a good call if you are saying was the 20 impeded or not. Obviously the 20 wasn't cut off, but it started a chain reaction that pushed three or four horses out a few lanes. As you know, going around a curve, the inside is significantly less distance than the outside of a track (which is why they start humans at different places along the track depending how long the race is.) So 20 has an argument that now he has to make up that much more ground than he would have if the horse did not drift four lanes out for no reason. And the farther out from the curve you are, the farther the increased distance is.

It is definitely a tough call with the race being as big as it is, and I know you don't want the ref's deciding the game, but they did what they thought they needed to. It would have been a life altering decision either way.

This was not a good outcome for the Kentucky Derby, of all races. The headline for it on Drudge today is, "Nightmare."

There should have been leniency in the decision that the horse drifted because of the muddy track conditions. It was not done intentionally by Saez to impede any horses' progress. It happened incidentally around the turn when there is more of a propensity for the horse to drift.

Frankly, I think it sucks for all involved. The best horse was not the winner, and most people lost money on the race.

Actually, no. The handicappers and betting public had it right with Maximum Security. He went off as the favorite. That's what makes it so "unsatisfying", as KGB would say.

To his credit, Spmack was right. It's food for thought whether Omaha Beach would have been the favorite and won, had he run.

You know what what have been a real nightmare? If War of Will is a less athletic horse and Tyler Gaffalione a less talented jockey and they go down in the stretch and cause a huge pile-up with horses writhing in the mud and jocks getting trampled.

It's something that happens in racing everyday. I don't see why it should be treated any differently just because it's the biggest race of the year.

The difference is I had picked Maximum Security to win and the refs stole it from me like Hue Hollins.

given the bizarre run up to the race, all the crazy upsets, it's pretty fitting that it ended this way.

the preakness and belmont will be interesting betting races.

happy for those who had #20 to payout in anything.

USA Today wrote today that Maximum Security wuz robbed.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/c ... 105796001/

"The stewards disqualified the best horse over an incident that impacted two also-rans while giving the victory to another horse who was never going to win on his own. How does that make sense?"

I personally had Maximum Security to win and two other live shots with Bodexpress and Long Range Toddy before the incident. They were in contention.

Maybe they should get people who actually understand horse racing to write about it.

No one is disputing there was a chain reaction. The main question is whether the chain reaction affected the outcome. The horses that finished behind Maximum Security in the order were not affected by the incidental drifting.

This is horse racing on a muddy track with 20 horses at the highest level all vying to win.

I couldn't say for sure War of Will wasn't going to blow right by Maximum Security if the latter horse doesn't move in front of him and chop him off. Horses have fragile minds. Something like that happens and a horse often quits racing.

Also, it was more than "incidental drifting". He shut off a challenger in a dangerous way. Think about the ramifications of such a thing being allowed. A trainer could just ride some dangerous lunatic like Paco Lopez and advise him to push any other horse right out of the way.

I'm all for minimal intervention by the stewards but I've had winners taken down for less at least a couple times this year.

Donald Trump has lambasted the Kentucky Derby after a horse who finished first at the popular race had his title stripped, blaming the overturn on an era of “political correctness.”

The president began his Sunday morning on Twitter with an angry tweet about the horse race that took place the night before, in which officials disqualified the first-place victor, named Maximum Security, for impeding the path of other horses. The runner-up, named Country Horse, then became the winner of the night.

“The Kentuky Derby decision was not a good one,” Mr Trump lamented. “It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch.”

“Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur,” he continued. “The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!”

 Well, you can tell these news organizations have guys that cover racing once or twice a year and really don't know much about it.

One of the funnier things was latter day Dave Feldman. Feldman was a real racing writer who knew his stuff, but late in his career he must have been like King Tut around the Sun-Times. I could tell that he would call his columns in to some low level editor or someone who had no idea about racing and that person would get the racing terms wrong or confuse homophones like "gait" and "gate".
