Didn't play my college ball anywhere so can only guess that 40 yards at soldier field in January is substantially more difficult than 81 yards in a florida swamp in May.

I won't defend this guy because I know nothing about him. I will say though that a 81 yarder in practice might mean something. Maybe if means over a long range he kicks a straight ball. Not one of these guys that has things curving this way and that. Indication of over potential to be accurate?

He won the Raiders kicking job to being the season but pulled his hamstring. They bounced around for a few weeks until the Vikings cut Carlson. He signed with the Raiders and was excellent.

I look at it this way, the Raiders chose to spend the money to keep him on IR the whole year rather than cutting him when he was healthy or agreeing to a settlement so they must have placed some value on him and thought others did as well.
