Have always like him. Hope he does well.

But if I were a Michigan guy I would be a little concerned that he has never been a head coach before and he jumps into a major program for his first head job.

Feels like a reach for an inexperienced guy with a big name.

Too bad the Bulls didn't have an opening.

The bigger concern is he was never even a college assistant. This is the kind of hire a mid major would make.

Yeah that is all part of the same concern I think....seems like a hire that is focused more on healing the drama with the Fab 5 than what is really best for the current basketball program.

Yeah. He has not been in college basketball for more than 20 years. It has a Lovie Smith to Illinois feel.

But dollars to donuts, I bet he'll get more highly rated Illinois prospects than Illinois and DePaul combined next year.

I'd think that assistant spots next to him will have a long line of applicants at the ready. Which may be more important.

Not exactly a high bar at this point.

Sadly not.

Who will forfeit more wins, Juwan Howard the coach or Juwan Howard the player?

I think the pre Belien decade showed that Michigan isn't a basketball program that just rolls out of bed and wins. They probably had more talent in the 10 years before he arrived than the 12 years he was there but were stuck in mediocrity.

This hire has epic disaster written all over it.

Great news for the Illini, though.

We don't have to get any better. The other teams just have to get worse.

My biggest concern is the team as constructed. Bradzeikis leaving is disastrous from a scoring perspective. Without him this team has 0 scorers. Belein solved a lot of that with defense but who knows how Howard will be with that. He was an assistant on a horrible team.

I enjoy that its him and think he can be a good recruiter like penny is at memphis but I really have no idea how this is gonna go.

Jalen rose needs to shut up with this fab 5 crap. The rose/webber beef has been annoying my entire adulthood (i was 14 when the fab 5 came into existance) and he is that jackass making this all about the fab5. stop. Juan was the one guy who shook that stuff off him. Jackson and king have lived off of it for 25 years. and rose has had this aching in his heart to make love/up with chris webber and is trying to use this to trampoline into cwebbs arms.

With one-and-done ending and the best HS players able to go directly into the NBA in a few seasons, Howard/Penny are probably not optimal hires for 2020 and beyond; as their main ++ is the ability to appeal to and recruit 5-star / NBA-bound players. Those players won't even be in the college recruiting game in a couple years.

Rose and the Fab Five should at least acknowledge that they copped the baggy trunks thing from the late 80's Illini team.

Jalen is really acting like he’s part of this hire.
