I do feel it's a win/win for him in that if they lose he'll be praised for playing despite the injury and it will quiet the Rose-like criticisms that he gave up even if he sucks, and if he wins he'll be praised to high heaven. About 3 guys I know that have blown or torn their Achilles were steadfast that the first injury was actually an Achilles injury. They claimed that the Warriors and Durant didn't want to say that because it might affect his impending Free Agency. I thought they were crazy but when you see something like this happen maybe it was an Achilles strain and not a calf injury all along.

The other thing is I'm not even sure how much respect he actually earned in the long run for doing this anyway. If he remained healthy and played the rest of the series, I'm not sure how much more love he'd be getting from his detractors or just neutral fans. Contrast that with Kawhi though, who sat out an entire season with a far more ambiguous injury on a respected franchise with maybe the most popular coach in the NBA yet is getting more praise than anyone from neutral fans this finals.
