The Pelicans are a waste of a franchise. New Orleans doesn't really give a shit and they're just run as a side project of the Saints. They should have stayed the Oklahoma City Hornets.

This is sort of a joke. In any other sport, why would you trade with a team in your own conference? I mean there were no better deals for the Pelicans from Eastern Conf teams?

Griffin was backed into a corner by Anthony Davis. No team would give up anything of value since Davis already let it be known that he was going to sign with the Lakers.

This is a bad trade for both teams.

Eh, I like it for the Pelicans. Lot of options with that #4 pick. Good young players to go with Zion.

So they have #1 and #4 for this years draft? Damn that's pretty good.

It's a 3 player draft but you can get a starter with the #4. If Zion turns out to be a top-10 player, nothing wrong with that. Plus you got future #1s from the Lakers as well.

Lakers are a joke.

Sign Mitch Richmond and Karl The Mail Man while you're at it.

Won't make the playoffs next year.

They traded AD in conference for 2 guys who sat out with injuries half of the last 2 seasons? Josh Hart and the #4 overall have value. Hart's 3P% dipped from 39 to 33 percent this last season; but then all the Lakers' 3 point shooting regressed this season for some reason. Pelicans rumored to be shopping the #4 pic for a center. #4 pic in this year's draft = best pick.

Wonder what the Celts last/best offer was?

Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier, 2019 Kings first round pick, 2020 Grizzlies first round pick?

that looks better than the suspects they took back from the Lakers. 2019 Lakers pick is better/ 2020 Grizzlies pick should be better than the Lakers 2020.

Now all that LeBitch has to do is demand the playoffs be seeded 1-16 with no conferences and he will be all set.

Five divisions/zero conferences would be great. There wouldn't be the same "half the league sucks" talk.

Houston's GM suggested at the Sloan MIT sports conference that the NBA drop down to basically one big conference, every team plays every other team twice (home and home). 58 game regular season? Sounds about right. Maybe if they add Mexico City and Seattle you get up to a 62 game season.

Take some aspects of the two posts above this one and do the following:

Contract Charlotte, NO, Minnesota, and Memphis. These are historically weak franchises in terms of value. Gonna see much better competition once the league gets smaller and those players are redistributed.

Good to see LeBrons agent get exactly what he wants. I wish our poorly run organization could luck into 2 hall of fame players because it helps the ability of a player to make game shows.

The talk wouldn't end, you'd just have more shitty teams play shitty teams. You'd have "The Best of the Worst" so to speak

Does this mean LeBron can take more “ minute maintenance” games off ?

Get the league down to 24-26 teams, so ~25 opponents x 2 games per = 50 games. Maybe have CH's 5 divisions thing and then teams double-up on games vs division opponents to back up to ~58 games.

Houston's GM says they'd be able to market regular season NBA games as a bigger deal and make up for the TV revenue lost by dropping 20 or so games by getting a higher rate on the broadcast rights to the remaining games. Teams like GS/Lakers/Celts/Knicks and other big market teams that sell out every home game would take a considerable hit due to the lost game revenue. But I imagine in the league overall attendance would consolidate on the remaining games and you wouldn't have only 8,000 people at a Pistons-Cavs Tuesday night in November tilt.

It was a great deal for the Pelicans. Second to the Leonard trade for the Raptors and the James Harden trade that I can remember recently. The West might open up for the Lakers since the Warriors will likely not have Durant return and Thompson will not play with that ACL for most of the season if he resigns with the Warriors. That means the top team going into the season in the West is probably the Rockets.

You'll never see contraction in North American pro sports, especially not since the coup of the Clippers caused franchise values to explode, such that even the lowest-valued franchises in the NBA are coming up on a billion and a quarter. You can't just wave a magic wand and expel franchises from the league (though I should never doubt Adam Silver and his power of woke-capitalist fusion: if someone accuses whichever VC ghoul owns the Grizzlies of grabbing an ass, we could possibly nuke the entire city of Memphis to get rid of him); the other 26 teams would have to buy the other four out for ~$125MM each if my napkin math is close. And while the league could probably shed Memphis and New Orleans without much strife, removing themselves from Charlotte and Minneapolis, mid-major markets where hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars have gone into appeasing the NBA's arena demands, would be a public relations disaster that no amount of LGBT pride promotional jerseys would mend.

If there was ever a window to knock off a franchise, it was Katrina, when the Hornets were homeless and the Bobcats were faceplanting out of the gate with an ill-advised regional sports network that cable companies didn't see the point in paying extra to carry. (Thankfully, no one would ever do that here.) Maybe they could have bought out Shinn and merged the two teams as the Charlotte Hornets. But that stuff just doesn't happen today. It didn't even happen yesterday. The last time a franchise "folded" was the NHL's Cleveland Barons, who merged with the Minnesota North Stars but eventually demerged to become the San Jose Sharks.

Lakers going all in on a guy who can’t stay healthy to play next to a guy who’s aging and not as focused as he once was on basketball.

What could possibly go wrong?

Them possibly not being able to offer another huge contract may be a blessing in disguise tho because it could force them to go after a handful of good but not great players to fill out their roster instead of maxing out a 3rd player and then digging thru the NBA trash can to depth out. As it stands, I give this team a 1 maybe 2 year window to win a title. Lucky for them the Warriors are gutted with injuries and there’s uncertainty as to who will even be on the team.

It took the gossipy NBA writers exactly one and a half days to figure this out and temper Saturday's enthusiasm.

Agreed on your analysis though but it's almost going to be funny to watch Buss & Pelinka inevitably screw this up. Hopefully it will permanently remove them & the Rambis family from pro sports

They have already started beating "Kawhi is coming to town" drums. Damon Jones he of the "I wonder how he got his ESPN job" and subsequently his basketball info, is now essentially predicting that Kawhi is on the way.

Chris Broussard on FS1 has already done the same. He gets me to change the channel as much as anyone, including politicians.

It would be my favorite sports story of all time if AD was tired of the Pelicans running in place so he decided to orchestrate this whole thing to get them a shit ton of more assets/help and then resigned with them in 2020.

lol that would be hilarious.

I find it hard to believe any team with a brain finalizes a deal like that without a contract in place tho..
