Butler wanted to be THE MAN on a team (not happening in Philly). They got an ok player in Richardson and freed up money to sign Horford. Took a hit in the talent column, but gained in team chemistry.

I don't know if it's that simple because he had no problem being the third, fourth, or fifth highest scoring player pretty often in the regular season on Philadelphia. He also was interested in Houston, where he certainly wouldn't have been the man either and there were other landing spots where he could've been the man with better long-term prospects than the Heat (though there are rumors they may go after Beal too, but I have no idea how they could ever pull that off).

Honestly I think this is kind of Butler being a mercenary. Recall that he wanted to be paid early in Minnesota before demanding his trade and it's interesting that his top 2 spots this year were in states with no income taxes. And besides that, it sounds like Wade sold him on the idea of the franchise in general, which is kind of an amusing turnabout from when Butler helped bring him to the Bulls.

Career wise it seems dumb for Butler. He ain't winning shit in Miami. In Philly he was close to going to the finals. Hell they may even get there this year. He squandered his chances.

Whether or not this is true is seriously gonna be one of the most interesting offseason stories for me. I'm already seeing speculation that Woj's source is Butler and other people talking to the Sixers front office think he was in fact offered the 5 year max.

If it is true, I'm also left wondering if there were buried stories of him being a locker room cancer or if the Sixers brass thought he might turn into one. I simply don't understand spending the money they did on Harris and Horford before Butler unless they're scared of Butler or are just irrationally in love with Richardson.

Was gonna get paid either way. He's cemented himself as a.poor man's Charles Barkley. Good player no rings. Too bad.
