I'll admit I'm late to the party at this point, but I'm more than happy to join in the fun being had by the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team as it vies for another World Cup. I had been following along with the outcomes and the headlines both on the pitch and off, enjoying things vicariously through friends and colleagues whom I follow on Twitter, people with far more knowledge of the game and emotional investment in the program.

. . .

The joy with which they actually play has an infectious quality about it, as does their utter lack of concern for the picayune thoughts of those critical of seemingly every behavior they may exhibit. It's hard to not have fun watching them play in large part because they have so much fun playing, and that's precisely the way sports are supposed to work.

What's really delicious is how they make all the right people unhappy as they keep winning in their style.

It's like the MLB chuds inside and outside that sport who feel it's their responsibility to police expressive exuberance, so as not to contribute to the erosion of our children's precious ethical fiber. Bat flips and fist pumps are anathema to these self-appointed vigilantes, representing some decay of civility in polite society that require a subsequent assault with a baseball for some combination of retribution and deterrence.

The actual reasons are largely deep-seated identity crises and discomfort with the celebration of multi-culturalism, of course, but only the dumbest of them have said those quiet parts out loud.

In "I don't actually give a shit about this, but it runs up the score in the culture war," Dan is saying the quiet part out loud, too.

I don't know how we ever got by before Megan Rapinoe invented having fun playing sports. No one else was doing it!

It's a strange dichotomy where on one hand people's feelings are supposed to be considered more than ever but on the other it's "fun" to rub an opponent's face in it.

Nice of Dan to admit he hasn't actually watched a game until this latest one, so essentially he's good with maybe two games every four years.

The liberal consensus seems to be that you should be respectful and decent to one another until you have an opportunity to advance your personal brand. Sound like anyone we have a 900-page thread about?

That sounds a lot like how people often describe college sports which Dan has long gone out of his way to say he dislikes because they're stupid and he only wants to watch competition at its most elite level.

Amusingly enough, the USWNT doesn't play and lose to men's collegiate teams, they lose to teams comprised of H.S. boys.

I'm sure Dan will be wearing his USWNT jersey while he watches the most elite players in the world compete tomorrow.

Very good point. Today it just isn't seen as "cool". I remember the great Walter Peyton flipping the ball to the ref all of the time when he scored a touchdown and he just might have been the greatest player ever in the game.

Personally I hate the celebrations if they insult the other team. That is why I love to watch hockey probably most of any sport because in the overwhelming percentage of the cases, they do respect the other players.

That might be but I think that it is ridiculous to mock or demean the players of the other team. Fight them? Sure. IF they hurt you, then hurt them back, hopefully worse. IF they get dirty, then get dirtier.

Going back to the women's soccer stuff. I know a bunch of people are actually rooting for the US team to lose and it is because of their arrogance. I understand that and I think that the US team should wonder about how what they are doing that pisses Americans off. When Mia Hamm and the rest of the women's team were winning championships, they were loved. Not so this team.

Personally, I think that US team is not as good as they think that they are. I think that they were lucky to beat England and also France. They won but could have very easily have lost. But in both of those games, they were outplayed in the second half. I'm glad they won but not greatly impressed by their performance.

The US Women's Hockey team is great and they just won Gold at the Olympics. I don't remember any of this shit happening with them. They were awesome to watch and they won a much more competitive tournament.

.....I also don't remember the "award" winning show saying a god damn word about them or the 2 Women's teams in the NCAA Championship game this year which featured 5 or 6 ladies from the Chicago-land area.

I guess what is going on is that a person on a sports team can create an entire new world for themselves publicity wise and money wise by being controversial. Looks at Krapinneck. Here we have a guy who was never a great player whatsoever and ended up a multi-millionaire because he railed against the so-called "system" of the United States. Now we have a good women's soccer player who also decided to carve a media career for herself by attacking the president of the US for whatever stupid reason. Why in the hell did she start this shit other than trying to carve another career for herself after her soccer career is over which it will be after this Sunday.

This is what is pathetic to me. It is so obvious how these assholes play the media game to their financial advantage. Fuck all of them.

I couldn't believe the Dutch team celebrated a goal by baking a delicious batch of stroopwaffels. They have no respect for the game.

I don't understand the rules. The half was over at 48:49? What the Christ....and they make fun of us for not using the metric system.

The clock doesn't stop, so the referee adds minutes at the half to compensate for all the time wasted doing clock-would-have-been-stopped things.
