Start Me Up is a good one. Just an awful song.

As far as the Beatles go, everything they did up to Revolver is overrated. Everything else is spotty, but the best work they did involved A Day in the Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, and Across the Universe.

The rest is overrated beyond belief...

The more McCartney influence there was, the worse the song. Not Ringo bad, but still just bubblegum crap.

McCartney has a lot of bad tunes, but it's a Lennon song, "Imagine," that may be the worst of all time.

ITT - how is "overrated" being defined?
Rolling Stone critics calling it one of the 500 greatest songs of all time or some shit?
Or just hugely popular songs that people are tired of hearing on the radio?
I'll hang up and listen for my answer before I weigh in.

Yeah, I'm having trouble with this category too. Overrated doesn't even mean bad, per se.

the word is thrown around too much to really take seriously anymore. most times when people say something's overrated it's their passive aggressive way of saying they hate it. which isn't what the word means.

frank's mention of "better man" is a good example for me. i like the song, i'll listen to it when it's on Lithium. but it's not one of their greatest songs and it seems to be mentioned as one of their best. same with "yellow ledbetter". that to me is another one i'd say is overrated.

"she talks to angels" by the black crows. "the rooster" by alice in chains. "come as you are" by nirvana. those would be some of my examples.

Goodness. These are worse than IMU's muscial thoughts.

Like the Van Morrison example earlier, there are probably 50 better Otis Redding songs out there. Dock of the Bay just gets too much love. Otis was probably one of the best singers of all time, so I got nothing against the guy.

It's strange in that it's the most popular Otis song but it sounds nothing like the typical Otis song. Similar to "Don't Fear The Reaper" which sounds more like the Byrds than the rest of Blue Oyster Cult.

Yeah or the dumb Godzilla. Come on play the live version of Cities on Flame on the radio once or twice.

Real catchy tune, but I was done with it by the time I was sixteen. I can see how it put them on the map, but they have so many better songs.

But why I am really replying is because someone wearing a Cage the Elephant concert tee once tried to tell me that the Doors were overrated and sucked, and I wanted to punch that person in the face, not out of any loyalty to the band (I don't care) or to the generation that produced them (I detest hippies), but out of a disgust for the person's obvious lack of intelligence. Sure, the Doors could be overrated, but they certainly don't suck, and if they did, better to say so bare-chested than wearing a Cage the Elephant shirt.

Also similar to a lot of 90s bands that would have one crossover hit that sounded nothing like the rest of their catalogue. I bought a ton of CDs off people that way.

Well, I knew you'd express your admiration or disdain bare-chested anyway...

They might be a little soft, but they certainly don't suck. I mean, I know there's issues of taste, but they had some talent, released some decent songs, and even experimented a little with other genres. I have the same view as you do on Dire Straits, but I wouldn't say Dire Straits sucked . . .

I dunno . . . that sounds like vintage Hazardous Youth. Perhaps musically a little more radio-friendly and a tad less Megadeathish, but still . . . lyrically, this is vintage:

She captured my heart when she filleted her sole
She mixed my emotions in her salad bowl
She baked me like a casserole
Sex with her is my only goal

"London Calling" is the worst song on London Calling. "Train in Vain" is a close second.
