Also, shortstop is a premium position and 1st base is not.

IMU has tried to knock Abreu since he came into the league and Abreu just keeps putting up numbers. Most of them have been put up with a terrible lineup so just imagine how superior he would be with some protection in around him in the batting order.

IMU is just simply an asshat. ANd you are very correct about the terrible line-up that he has had surrounding him most of his career. Clearly he has adapted this year to concentrate on driving in runs while in previous years he no one on base so he concentrated on getting on base.

The guy is the prototype of a very good major league hitter. That game winning hit the other day was classic. A little dribbler against a shift to drive in Moncada at first was an amazing piece of hitting as far as I am concerned.

Nah IMU is a fine guy. He is just a persistent troll. He also plays quite an act on here. He is a decent person all the way around.

Yeah Frank, IMU was really nice at Arlington.

He is super friendly and incredibly sports passionate. I can’t vouch for his board persona, and he used to give me crap about mine. The message board tends to accentuate the worst in us.

Javy is a free swinger, and those types of guys will have terrible at bats. My eyes have seen him going the other way a lot more this year rather than always pulling off the ball. That is one big improvement. Maybe he is #40. He’s not anywhere near Trout, that is certain.

Javy is one of those mythical creatures created by a combination of Cub fan fancy, the bought and paid for chicago baseball media and an ownership selling sentimentality. His many flaws get smoothed over like the sheet on a freshly made bed.

OMG did you see his tag! There is only one person in this whole world who can put down a tag like that...the taggiest tag that ever done tagged

The tag stuff really became like parody but Baez is objectively fun as hell to watch.

That’s it. He is fun to watch. The tag stuff is cool. His crazy slides are cool. He makes a lot of really nice plays. He is a very solid bat despite the holes in his swing. I thought he would be a career .240 hitter, and he seems to have found a way to be closer to .300. He also provides a lot of power for a premium defensive position. It means more when an SS hits 30+ bombs than a 1B guy.

He plays with pure joy.

He's so dreamy!

I wonder why this totes awesome defensive wizard hasn't been awarded a GG yet?

I know you love baseball. It’s ok to concede that Javy is a really unique and fun player. If you can’t see it because of your anti-Cubs bias, I understand. If you don’t want to give an inch to IMU, I understand. And I certainly understand how all things Cubs get overhyped in the Chicago media.

I try to be pretty objective when looking at my favorite teams. My favorite Cubs player had always been Kerry Wood. But Javy is just on a different level in terms of fun to watch. I loved watching guys like Gwynn and Vlad hit a baseball. I loved watching Griff go after a ball in center. I love watching Verlander. It’s because I love the game. Of course it means more when it’s my favorite team.

Javy Baez should not be mentioned in the same breath with any of those players, except for the great Kerry Wood.

This discussion has veered off from Jose Abreu being the 14th best-hitting first baseman in MLB.

I love how dolphin talks of Baez but he would give his right flipper to have Baez on the Sox

You veered it from "light hitting" once it was proven that Abreu had been one of the best run producing 1st basemen in the AL. He has had a rough ten games or so, but will get his numbers back up very soon. Peaks and valleys.

OPS suddenly became the stat to use because it favored your favorite guys who happen to walk a little more than Abreu.

Baez is good for baseball. I wasn’t comparing him stats or talent wise to HoFer’s. I was comparing the entertainment value of watching what he does on the field. If he keeps hitting 30 hrs and batting .290 on a winning baseball team, his aggregate stats will be just fine.

No reasonable person would consider him Grif or Gwynn, now or ever.

Why? Sox have a superior 3B, are fine at SS and have their 2B of the future hitting .375 at AA.

I dunno man. You know that I hate all things Cub as much as you, but Baez at short and hitting 5th or 6th, with Timmay at 2B would make the Sox infield really really really fucking good.

IF isn't a concern going into the future. I'm not giving my right arm for any help there.

I'm not saying this happens IRL. But it's fun to think about. Moncada 3B, Baez SS, Timmay 2B, Abreu 1B would be one hell of an infield. Definitely not much getting by those guys on the ground.

Moncada would be the low K man in that group.

Timmay would end up being an OF as all reports are the Madrigal is Magical with the glove at 2B.

And all 3 of us would rather have Tatis Jr over Baez and Moncada.

Hahn doing great stuff. All the bad moves were Kenny.

I would be happy to have him, but not over baez. He can play 3rd and put. Bryant in the OF

IMO this opinion will change by the end of next season.

 You should probably worry more about your Cubs not being able to win a game on the road than Jose Abreu, who will finish the season with at least an .810 OPS.
