Yeah, this was a good story. Hopefully the idiots in the State's attorney's office don't punish this guy for protecting his property.

For the record, the shooting was actually north of Gurnee next to Antioch....the chase did start by the mall, though.

Factually speaking, it's in-between Antioch and Old Mill Creek.....unincorprated. They have ZERO police coverage there. Also a peculiar place for this sort of activity....old money.

I live very close to there and drive through there everyday to work.

The knife's bad news. Felony-murder charges for the surviving teens? Not clear if they were at the guy's house to commit a crime or in the process of doing so. Stolen vehicle was from a prior incident. Maybe they wanted to swap it out for one with more gas in the tank.

if you're running from the police in a stolen vehicle, pull over and let one person out, and then drive on a bit more. pull over and let another person out, rinse, repeat. Cops have to decide between chasing individual perps or the stolen vehicle.

We have to register EVERY knife owner, and put them on a list. I don't care if it is an assault knife, steak knife, or butter knife!

Here’s the best part . A prosecutor and judge who actually do their jobs and aren’t interested in catch and release with a low bond and useless ankle bracelet monitoring . Cautionary tale for the wayward youth of Chicago. Commit your felonies in Cook County where they aren’t interested in keeping you locked up.

Five teenagers have been charged and another was fatally shot after an attempted vehicle theft in Lake County, Ill., which led to a high-speed chase into Chicago Tuesday morning, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

A 16-year-old male, three 17-year-old males, and an 18-year-old woman, identified as Diamond Davis of Chicago, were charged with first degree murder in connection with the incident. They were charged with murder because a 14-year-old boy died of gunshot wounds sustained during the commission of a forcible felony, the sheriff's office said.

The five appeared in bond court late Tuesday afternoon where a judge set bail at $1 million for each of them. They are due back in court on September 5.

Sometimes you can get your flatware in colors. I have seen table knives that are black. TBH, they are terrifying and there is no practical reason for them. Ban Them!

Well I am sure besides bleeding hearts there is likely the problem of crowding in Cook County Jail. Always seems to have been an issue. Keeping the really harmless and releasing felons or charged felons does not seem to be the answer.

You will have action on it once you provide evidence of a knife stabbing 26 people in 32 seconds.

Even in Rambo movies that shit doesn't happen.

Your average Chicago Gang Banger ain't accomplishing (shooting) that with his .38 or .45 either.

Just read the DH account. Quite a story. One kid hid in a dumpster for 45 minutes before he was found.

I was under the impression you were not supposed to shoot someone on your property who is breaking into your car (assuming you’re not in the car). But I think the old guy was justified in this case because one of the kids approached him in a threatening manner.

In any case, it is sad that someone dies over auto theft.

I thought similarly. Used to be a saying if you shot someone on your porch drag them in the door because you were not supposed to shoot unless intrusion happened. As you pointed out though this was different. Maybe people need body cams?

Imagine this scared kid running from the cops and hops into a dumpster only to see this:

with a piece of soggy pizza in his mouth and moldy lettuce in his hair.

it was 1:00 in the morning....in a very isolated area....a home owner sees a group of teens approaching his house in the middle of the night. Yeah, it's not going to be hard to describe it as being "reasonably scared of danger / his life".

I still want to know how a group of Chicago teens found themselves in THAT area....not far off the highway, but still....VERY remote.

Charges being filed with the first mug shot. Seems like a pretty sad affair.

I imagine there will be negotiations of some manner to avoid trials and long to life sentences for the young offenders. Certainly a shame someone is dead and moreover why troubled youth travel so far for a target not very rewarding seemingly.

Case similar to this happened in Indiana. 4 teens charged with felony murder after playing hooky from school to engage in some casual B&E of a residence. Homeowner was home and capped one of their compatriots. The 4 remaining defendants all charged with felony murder.

One plead out to 45 years, the other 3 went to trial, were convicted of first-degree/felony-murder and sentenced to 50 to 55 years.

Eventually found its way to Indiana S.Ct. which took pity on the teens and vacated their felony-murder convictions and ordered them resentenced on burglary charges. 3 of the 4 who hadn't taken plea deals---and therefore waived their appeal rights--were resentenced to 10 years each on the burglary charges. But b/c it was a State charge all were quickly sprung from prison after serving ~3 years total.

Prosecutor went back and also resentenced the 4th defendant who had taken the plea deal. All 4 appear to be out of prison, at least on this charge:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/indiana-man-2 ... d=33919381

Shitty plea deal, 45 years and waive appeal rights vs go to trial and get another 5 to 10 years (which translates to another 1-3 in state time) and preserve your right to appeal.

yeah, it should probably be saved for situations where multiple people participate in the commission of a major felony and all are armed or at least aware that one of them has some sort of weapon. The teens in the Indiana case didn't have so much as a knife, iirc. Although they did get into the house proper vs being out on the dude's front-lawn with a bowie knife. .e.g., 2 guys break into a house, one or both are carrying and one of them gets killed in the process, then, yeah, go ahead and hit the guy who lived with felony-murder.

In this case, prosecutors most likely over-charging to give them leverage in the plea negotiations, like Pittmike noted. Prosecutors love having the death-penalty or felony-murder available; having the ability to threaten a defendant with death or life in prison churns chases more quickly.
