I'm not really sure. I seem to remember that even coming into training camp there was word that he couldn't go full speed. Then he injured his ankle and there was concern he wouldn't be ready for week 1.

If I were a betting man I'd bet that he will get himself healthy and return. The retirement takes the pressure off him and the Colts to answer the question "when?"

Based on Irsays interviews since I think Luck said he was retiring in March and they asked him to with hold the announcement until to help sell out tickets.

They aren’t going after his bonus money so it sure seems like a deal was made. I think the colts still leaked it during the game as a fuck to luck.

Not trying to recoup $ makes the Colts look good in the public eye and in the eye's of other NFL players.

It also makes things easier should he decide to return to the team in 2020 or 2021.

Has there been a malpractice claim actually happen between a pro team? I can’t think of one. I assume the CBA has language that eliminates them.

I don’t see luck coming back. He seemed to be looking toward life after football. And more importantly maintaining a standard of living afterward.

The money the Colts agreed not to go after was guaranteed against injury but not against retirement so it could have been a tricky legal situation to try and get it back if he claimed to have lifelong injuries based on the treatment they provided.

Injury settlements are incredibly common in the NFL. My guess is the NFL has no real desire to let things like this go to court.

If that's true, I hold Luck and Irsay equally contemptible. No one should have an issue with a player retiring from the game. But the timing of this is absolutely ridiculous.

The injury he retired from seemed to be changing as summer went on and never actually had a true diagnosis. Could the whole thing have been faked?

Considering his previous injuries, which he came back from to have his best season last year, this one seemed absolutely minor. Feels like we are not getting the full story.

I can completely see him being fed up with the rehab process etc. Not having known about his newborn son until yesterday I had thought to the best of my knowledge he only had some minor injury stuff this time. Having a kid and deciding you know what I am done is just fine with me. If I had millions I would. Earnhardt Jr. basically did the same thing.

I agree. He has already made approximately $97 million dollars. He can do whatever he wants, including absolutely nothing, and he and his family can live in luxury for the rest of their lives.

In the coming years I think more players will be retiring at an earlier age than had been the norm. When you have made millions, tens of millions, or in a case like Luck, nearly $100 million before the age of 30 there aren't a lot of compelling reasons to subject yourself to that kind of physical punishement if you either don't have to or simply don't want to anymore. You can explore umpteen other career options with the benefit of having financial security while doing so.

Doesn't Luck's dad run the XFL? That's probably where he's headed.

Not a chance. Why would he move to a sport where he would make pennies compared to his NFL deal and still deal with all the physical abuse?

At the other end of the spectrum you have a guy like Peyton Manning, who had already won a title, amassed a fortune, and had a neck that was seemingly one hit from paralysis. Funny how different the outlook on life can be.

All you have to do to get a taste of what Peyton Manning's desires were is just play varsity basketball or football in high school. It's pretty goddam exhilarating, even at that level. It's a conquering heroes type syndrome that's probably in our DNA.

Luck wouldn't have to play the whole XFL season; just a hook to get people to tune in for a few games. They could tell defenses they'll be kicked out of the league if they lay too hard a hit on Luck. Isn't the WWE still running things behind the scenes in the XFL.
