Love the story of him picking up O.B. and throwing him like a sack of potatoes

It was great hearing stories about him in the early days of the Score. Buffone often sounded afraid of him & Pettibone loved the guy. Funny how he was preceded by Ed Sprinkle and not really replaced until Hampton came along a decade after he left. Or how he's the same size as LeBron James.

He was a natural born Oakland Raider type though.

Greatest Bear nobody ever heard of. I assume if he hung around Chicago after retirement and opened a bar eveyone would be claiming he was the best ever.

He was my avatar here when I first joined.

That shocked me until I realized how young you are.

Nas had like three kids by age 17. He didn't have time for Bears history with all those diapers to change and bottles to make.

Dead serious. I didn't love watching football until I became an adult. Baseball was my favorite sport until my early 20's and basketball was a close 2nd. Now football is by far my favorite and I'm a somewhat casual fan of everything else.

Kinda sounds like Julius Peppers, great athlete but lacked the "neanderthal gene", would kill your team if you pissed him off.

Great read.

Yes it was. When I worked in Arkansas, the general manager was a guy who was Adkins roommate at Tennessee and we talked about Atkins a bit. I remember him well on the field as being a guy who was actually able to jump over guys trying to block him. I also remember the practices at St. Joe's and how the players were scared shitless of Papa Bear who drove around in a golf cart with Abe Gibron the offensive line coach at the time. The players used to pay kids to smuggle them sodas during practice and try to hide them from Halas. It was funny.

ANother real bad ass during that time was BIll George. I was at the bowling alley a short distance from St. Joes and O'B was drunk and harassing a waitress there. George came in and told O'B to get out. He shut up and left immediately. No one messed with Bill George. He was the NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion while in college.
