DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A Des Moines Register reporter who wrote about racist tweets posted years ago by an Iowa security guard is no longer employed by the Iowa newspaper because he also made offensive comments on social media.

Editor Carol Hunter wrote in a column posted online Thursday night that reporter Aaron Calvin “is no longer with the Register.”


The Register began investigating comments made by Calvin on Twitter after his story about Iowa security guard Carson King sparked outrage. The story profiled King, who gained national fame after he held a sign seeking beer money during an ESPN show and then promised to donate the more than $1 million that poured into a children’s hospital.

In the story, Calvin noted King had posted two racist tweets more than seven years ago when he was a teenager. People angered by the story found old tweets from Calvin that made offensive comments about race, gay marriage, and other topics.

Calvin couldn’t be reached for comment. His Twitter account is no longer open to the public.

Your stance seems to be that the tweets of a 16 year old don't matter because it may not reflect the type of person they are now. My solution is to have the tweets made by a 16 year old disappear from the public twitter account of a person. Why is that getting you so upset? If you truly believe that it is unfair to judge someone for tweets as a teenager while a college kid then it seems a pretty logical solution to remove the tweets of a 16 year old on a public twitter account.

That is quite a straw man but we certainly would judge an author based on what they write in the same manner. Does Mein Kampf get looked at differently simply because it is old?

This is just wrong. You are the one saying that his words as a 16 year old don't matter because he is older. If you were making the same argument about a book written by a 16 year old then I would say the person should probably stop publishing it.

It isn't equivalent to burning books you don't agree with. It is about whether we should judge someone for what they wrote at that age. If you say we shouldn't then why not just have those tweets deleted? You are saying those tweets don't matter.

The Tweets don't matter. Telling everyone to delete year old Tweets defeats one of the only important reasons for Twitter to exist, which is to have a record of what people thought during certain events and at different points of their lives.

Taking random out of context Tweets for a hit job years after the fact is the problem. And the answer is not to burn it all down after a year.

No, that isn't why Twitter exists. It exists for people to share their thoughts. When those thoughts are no longer worth paying attention to what is the harm of deleting them?

Now Rick knows the sole purpose of Twitter. And having any historical context to it is wrong because it's only for one thing. If is it only for sharing thoughts then why does the company save content instead of having it disappear like Snapchat?

Supposedly they found some social media posts talking about enjoying killing and not liking minorities by that Dallas cop who killed Botham Jean in his own house. The judge wouldn't allow them in during the guilt phase of the trial, but she's allowing the prosecution to present them during the sentencing phase.
