I dont think anyone east of the Mississippi even know what Trout looks like, or has ever even seen him bat.

May have been true in the days when you had to watch TWIB for national baseball coverage, but baseball content is pretty easy to find these days.

The point isn't that there are highlights available. The majority of fans live in central and eastern time zones. West Coast baseball is on after most people go to bed.

meh....save that nonsense for the NBA.

Getting TRout seen in the playoffs is one thing, but Ohtani? Why? He sure the fuck ain't no Ichiro so who cares?

Superstars? Trout, Yelich, Bellinger, Lindor just off the top of my head. Baez is a superstar due to not only his talent/offensive output/defense skills but due to the fact that you cannot take your eyes off him when he's on the field. I equate him to a Patrick Kane type player. Or the best point guard out there. Feel free to disagree. I don't assess players based on any sort of bias other than I watch him play every day. Trout is #1 in baseball & quite possibly the best player EVER. So he is in a league of his own. Super-superstar??

That's such a Cubbie fan statement it should be encased in plexiglass and displayed for public veneration.

Superstar is an ambiguous category, different for every speaker so I'd like to see who you consider the other superstars of the league are for comparison's sake.

"Not a great route" ... "would have been better off throwing that one to second base" ... "gotta run those out" ... "I think he had a play at home there" ... I'm paraphrasing but he calls it right down the middle always with very little bias. As much as any analyst in the league. He wants the Cubs to win but he never sugarcoats it. He just talks baseball. I worked with Uecker yes and I was a friend of Ernie Harwell my hero and I am friends with Marty and Ueck. Too many stories to tell........amazing people.

Also, have you ever worked with any old-time broadcasters? Guys like Uecker, M. Brennaman, Jack Buck, Harwell, etc? Even if just for a short time? Or have any personal stories with any of these guys?

Nobody is on Trout's level. NOBODY.

To put Baez in the same tier as Trout and Yelich is completely insane.

Trout is better than Mantle was. He may be better than all of 'em...

Fuck Yelich.

Trout is on another level completely.

Just because other players are playing during Trout's career, that doesn't preclude them from being superstars. The HOF is filled with a tremendous range of talent. You want there to be like 10 guys in there?

I agree. Trout is Mantle.

Very close

Trout is very low key and lacks charisma for the games best current player.
Mantle had unbelievable stats. 977 career ops. He had blazing speed. He suffered a major knnee injury he played through. Pitching wasn't watered down like it is now with many more teams.

Pitching isn't watered down. It's better than ever. "Charisma" has zero to do with who the best player is in baseball.

1966 MLB era 3.52, 2019 MLB era 4.49. Now 10 more teams, a juiced ball. Trout certainly is tremendous. Mantle was also great.

Len,

How do you spend your winters/offseasons?

Do you travel a lot? Do you lie low at home mostly? Do you have some kind of cottage or log cabin in Wisconsin or Michigan (cant remember which one you're originally from)

What would Mantle and Aaron have done with PED's and current training methods? Remember reading Aaron's autobiography as a kid and he and his brother were so poor that they used broomsticks and bottle caps to practice hitting. The game is different, but the guys with superior god given hand eye coordination would likely thrive in any era.

Dunno if they've ever administered the battery of "Babe Ruth tests" to Trout. Be interesting to compare Trout vs Ruth vs Pujols. Pujols took the Babe Ruth perceptual/motor skills/etc tests during his prime and pretty much matched Babe's results.

Right around that time I recall hearing the BALCO guy (Conte?) on some interview explaining how people think PEDs only help with strength and recovery from injury. When they help with all aspects of performance, motor-skills, visual targeting speed etc. Pujols tested like a freaking terminator on some of the elements. Wonder how much was Pujols and how much of it was juice.

Ted Williams supposedly had incredibly high visual acuity and he could see the grip the pitcher had on the ball, then instantly process that information and adjust his swing. If you were to pair that type of natural ability with PED's he would have not only been able to put up even bigger numbers during his prime, but likely would have extended his career another few years.

that's a scary thought, Ted Williams with all the benefits of modern training regimens and tech-enabled coaching. Tho maybe they would've ruined Williams with launch-angles and swinging for the fences. Williams too wily a hitter to fall for that, I'd think. When he wanted to hit home runs he had no problem doing so.

Lol, yeah, I had to pick one of the three threads applicable in the Cubs forum. I went with this one. Sorry.

Just a shout out to Len Kasper and JD. Great job on the broadcast during the pandemic. I can hardly tell they are working remotely for away games and have done a great job transitioning to the new format.

Used to be the best this board has was someone's grandma having an affair with Bozo back in the day. This is a step up

Chicago was such a cowtown back in the day. Bozo was practically it's most famous citizen. Other than the time Muhammad Ali was living on the southside.
