New Balance last for years.

I purchased a pair of fairly high-end New Balance road racing shoes last year and was shocked at how quickly the tread wore off (somewhat understandably for a road shoe, but these were worn bald incredibly fast) but even more importantly the uppers on the outside of both feet wore and eventually ripped out. I maybe got 150-200 miles in them before they were demoted to lawn-mowing duty. The Nike trail shoes I run in have been awesome, they have taken a serious beating and still keep coming back for more.

I think it just varies at times from shoe to shoe. I had the exact opposite experience. That last pair of Nike running shoes I bought wore our very quickly. I went with a New balance trail shoes and they have been great.

If you run or seriously exercise Brooks is the only right answer.

The Brooks Glycerin shoes I bought this summer are easily the most comfortable running shoes I have ever bought. Granted, they are $150 and I had never broken the $100 barrier on the ASICS and Mizuno running shoes I am comparing them too.

I have run in Brooks before without too much complaint but they just didn't seem to have the fit or the soft ride i prefer. I never ran in the Glycerine however. Not a hater at all but there are lots of other great alternatives besides Brooks.

I have noticed a steep decline in quality.

I think that it's pretty much across the board for all similar companies. No brand seems immune from cheap production and falling quality.

New Balance last for years.

I've owned two pairs of New Balance shoes. Shittiest shoes I've bought since getting Chuck Taylor's as a kid.

Brooks felt like discount stuff back in the day. I remember thinking they were hard and a bit ill fitting, just like you mentioned. Never saw fit to spend on the high end stuff though.
