As crazy as this sounded, I'm starting to agree with this more and more. We're definitely seeing some more than circumstantial evidence that this may be the case.

I'm also starting to think that all of the "cute" plays and trickeration we have seen is because Nagy realizes his quarterback is very limited, so he has to rely on fooling the defense more than he would like.

What’s the evidence?

We see it game in and game out. Nagy is calling tons of pass plays and giving Mitch a lot to deal with to prove to Pace and the front office that Mitch isn't a guy the Bears can win with.

I'm with you. Earlier in the year, I wasn't so sure about Nagy. Now I'm more confident in him being a good coach and think that the vast majority of the offense problems are due to the Bears having a very limited/bad starting quarterback.

The next few weeks will tell us everything we need to know about both coach and QB.

That seems like a strategy that will backfire enormously if there’s any truth to it. One of the worst things you can say about an offensive coach is that he’s incapable of adapting his system to his personnel and that’s exactly what everyone is currently saying about Nagy.

It’s Nagy as much as it’s anything else. And FavreFan has a point -Nagy can’t adapt to the talent he has been given (and in all likelihood had some say in Pace acquiring), that’s also a problem.

Nagy got hired because he was gaga over Trubsiky before the draft. If Mitch goes down, most likely Nagy does too. Pace will get one more coach hire because technically Fox wasn't his and he can sell ownership that he did build an elite defense.

Not really. (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is in line for a massive extension that locks him in to being the Bears quarterback for next year + at least 3 more years. That's a 5 year commitment including this year for Nagy where he would be fired if (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky failed to deliver. There is no guarantee that he gets another job after that though a lot of failed coaches have ended up getting a second chance with bad organizations.

So instead he designs the season for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky to sink or swim as a passer and let's it fall as it is.

So per Nagy's plan, he sinks (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky, then they spend draft and/or FA capital (taking away from adding pieces to said defense) to get a competent starting QB, but by then the defense is out of its prime and Nagy gets fired anyways.

Dumb strategy. Nagy needed to strike either last year or this year when the D was in it's prime.

That's not entirely true. They moved the ball better with Daniel than with Mitch.

Nagy wasn't brought here to have a dominant defense. If they get a different quarterback he will clearly get his chance to prove his ability on the offensive side of the ball.

Nagy has leverage and time. Pace does not....this is his 5th season and his record is NOT GOOD. His career directly joined with the success or failure of Mitch. As frustrated as I am by the season thus far, I'm not ready to conclude Nagy is an idiot. If he's made up his mind that Mitch sucks and he needs a different QB to succeed....the time to use his leverage is NOW. If we can all see the wide open receivers on replay that Mitch cannot see you can bet your ass Nagy sees it too and has set down with Pace and said "I'm sorry, but Mitch isn't going to work". I don't think any offensive-minded coach wants to hitch their career on that wagon. Nagy's career as of right now is not linked to Mitch, but if he waits....it will be.

There is zero proof documenting Nagy being all ga-ga over Mitch. I think Pace was the only one in that category.

Total yardage was about the same, 3 and outs were about the same, establishing the running game was about the same, they scored st about the same clip, I think 3rd down conversions and average distance was about the same too.

Chase is a little more accurate than Mitch, but other than that -yeah, the offense was still awful and pretty much the same plays were called.

Nagy isn’t anything special, and he’s absolutely part of the problem. He hasn’t developed Mitch much at all either, something he was very specifically brought in to do. How can you trust he’d develop the next guy?

This would make sense if the offense looked different with Chase.

Based on what? The numbers say that isn't true.

Yeah but nothing in this post refutes my post you quoted. That still leaves Nagy looking like he can’t adapt his system to the limitations of his QB. Why would a GM hire a coach who needs Patrick Mahomes in order to be a success?

That's a small hit to the reputation of Nagy but he ultimately keeps his job and gets to select a quarterback who fits his system better. Just like with Cutler, every coach and GM who traded for him or signed him to an extension ultimately had their jobs put into his turnover prone hands. If Nagy doesn't believe (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is the guy to get the job done it is smart to ask him to do things he may not be capable of where he either proves him wrong or proves that (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky should be wearing a Bills jersey on his next contract.

Some of you are literally suggesting Nagy is "tanking" an NFL season. Also, what debunks this theory is the signing an ultimate "beta" backup QB, one who could pose zero threat to Trubsiky.

It's too early to say he's tanking the season, I'd say he's turning the volume up to 11 to showcase the fact that Mitch is a bust? What other options does he have to not let his career go down with Mitch?

He isn't really tanking the season. He just isn't going to tank the future of the team coddling a quarterback he doesn't think can perform at the needed level to reach the goals he wants.

It's like how they traded away Jordan Howard even though Howard was clearly a person who would have played a lot this year. He wasn't the type of player Nagy wanted.

Giving away good players for 6th round picks isn't really a good strategy. Sounds like Nagy has some diva in him.

‘Ok, here’s how we’re going to show them.. I’m going to take the #1 draft pick QB the GM hired me to coach up, hitched his future in the NFL to, that I gushed over to get the job in the 1st place.. and make him pass a whole bunch of times each and every game to not only prove that he sucks, but that I totally know what I’m doing and am very competent and can be trusted to develop the next guy we bring in.. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?’

^This is idiot meatball logic. And yet some of you think this is what’s going on, basically. Let me just say this, if this is actually what’s going on, then Nagy is a colossally stupid ape man that I don’t want anywhere near the team I cheer for, and he doesn’t have a future in the NFL.

He’s a coach. He’s supposed to be doing the best he can with what he has -not the worst he can so he can prove something to the guy that hired him. It would make more sense for a coach to make his point by turning something bad into a positive. The position some of you are taking on this makes absolutely no sense to me at all, and is actually a new level of Bear fan hilarity I’ve not yet seen. So, thanks for that at least.

 Yeah, pretty strange that a quarterback would be expected to "pass a whole bunch of times" in a game. Maybe Nagy should run the triple option since (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky would be better at it?

Once again, Nagy is expecting his quarterback to win games by passing the ball. I'm not sure what you are mocking here but it is clear you aren't thinking this one through.

That's not exactly true. If Nagy doesn't feel he can run his system because if actually passes the ball a bunch of times it will be obvious he sucks then it is his job to figure that out as quick as possible so it can be changed. (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is being given a chance to show he can throw the ball as a quarterback in the NFL.

This may be controversial, but in general it's a problem if your quarterback can't pass the ball. To coddle (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky into being a running back may work out alright in the short term but it isn't a long term strategy. I don't blame Nagy if in year 3 of (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky's career he wants him to sink or swim as an actual quarterback.

Once again, Nagy is expecting his quarterback to win games by passing the ball. I'm not sure what you are mocking here but it is clear you aren't thinking this one through.

It would make more sense for a coach to make his point by turning something bad into a positive. The position some of you are taking on this makes absolutely no sense to me at all, and is actually a new level of Bear fan hilarity I’ve not yet seen. So, thanks for that at least.

Should John Harbaugh start making Lamar Jackson throw 50 times a game? Here I was thinking he was doing an excellent job adapting his offense to the strengths of his QB but really he should be purposely trying to make him look bad so his GM will get him a better QB.

The difference is that everyone knew Lamar Jackson was a guy who probably was going to be a better runner than passer. (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky was supposed to be a good passer.

Personally, I wouldn't want my quarterback running around 15 times a game so often.

I'm not convinced Nagy is doing this intentionally...I'm just saying it's a logical argument. We can start with the premise that Mitch the QB is a bust and Nagy knows this. Here are his options:
1. Hold on tightly to his core offensive philosophy and system and continue to work in developing Mitch.
2. Pour gas on the fire of his core offensive philosphy / system to make it painfully obvious Mitch sucsks.
3. Abandon his core offensive philosophy, turn Mitch into Trent Dilfer - Game Manager, and hope the defense wins FOR you.

Options 1 and 3 tie the fate of his career to Mitch. Option 2 is reckless, risky, and unethical, but if executed immediatey, it's the only option that separates his fate from Mitch.

He's clearly not (yet) executing option 3, which many seem to think is what he should be doing. Option 1 makes him a really bad head coach.

This isn’t true at all, his fate is already tied to Mitch. It was tied to him the day he got hired and wasn’t allowed to pick his own staff on one entire side of the ball. He broke down film of Mitch, scouted Mitch for another team, and based on all that told Pace he was the right guy for the job to help develop him. He can’t just turn around now and say ‘remember all that stuff, yeah I was wrong about all that, but you can totally trust my opinion on the next guy and rely on me to develop him’. No way in hell will that fly, nor should it. If this falls apart, Nagy and Pace could both get launched.

Nagy has every reason in the world to do whatever it takes to help Mitch succeed. If Mitch can’t succeed, it won’t be because Nagy is secretly trying to expose something on the low -it will be because of a combination of Mitch not being good enough and Nagy not being good enough. That’s it, it’s not complicated.

If they move on from (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky instead of giving him a contract extension then Nagy will easily stay as the head coach.

Then you've never experienced Corporate execs lie through through their teeth for self gain. It's possible....but I agree not likely. Pace is the only one who is 100% directly tied to Mitch's success / failure.
