No. Whether or not he thought it was good, he said it wasn't music. This is the same thing, auteurs putting a velvet rope around what is "cinema."

Yeah, I don't think Sam is right with that one. Sinatra was criticizing something he didn't understand. I'm pretty sure Scorcese and Coppola understand blow-it-up CGI fests very well.

No, they're each the arrogant stuffed shirt that Sinatra was in the name of THEIR art imo.

I don't think they do. I would think a film maker could find something to appreciate about them.

Them again most people here didn't think the Lucas museum had any sort of art to it either.

In fairness, many here (myself included) thought it was lowbrow art unworthy of millions of public dollars and a prime lakefront location.

Despite the arguments that it could teach and inspire young creative people in movies and technology.

No , just a citizen tired of the lakefront being more cluttered by the year and water/sewer/trash collection/city sticker fees & taxes going to fund a billionaire's dick picture. Same as with the monstrosity that is the Obama Center & Tiger Woods golf course.

Yep.

And everyone knows the theatre is where real masters work.

Movies are the realm of the yokels.

Hell or High Water was a fantastic movie. Came out in 2016. I'm not a big movie guy anymore but this line of thinking doesn't strike me as accurate... plus it's the same position Rick holds :D

Perhaps the reason you aren't a movie guy anymore is that Scorsese and Coppola have a point about the modern state of cinema.

Strict parameters on a populist art form. What If I said anything that doesn't play at Facets Multimedia or Music Box isn't cinema?

I'll check it out. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of aside from a few franchise movies which seem to be less and less sustainable there aren't a lot of things I'd go see or even rent anymore. There used to be good comedies, summer action stuff, some teen stuff, or even dramas but it's like that's all disappeared. Looking at the last 20 years or so of academy awards there are only a couple I've seen and some of them were just okay. I don't know if it's actors or the scripts or what.

If only they were still able to make them...

The Irishman looks fantastic. Been awhile since I was looking forward to a movie this much.

You know what...this kinda proves my point...there was a remake of Flatliners in 2017. I mean are they just all out of ideas or what?

A Star is Born has been made 4 or 5 times and has been nominated for an Oscar every time. Why reinvent the wheel when there are plenty of young people who never saw the last rendition.

It's closer to the Beatles if they said hair metal wasn't music

It's all been on repeat since Shakespeare.

but to your point, you could go out every weekend to a fantastic play in this city with great story lines, well written dialogue and people acting their asses off for the price of what it now costs to see a movie. I guess I haven't been paying attention because I was shocked at what I payed for a ticket, popcorn and soda last time I went. It's kind of sad when you go to a theater and see something fantastic and then see the actors hopping into a 10 year old Accord to take a late bartending shift while Mark Wahlberg is sitting in a mansion pretending to not be dickhead.

I still remember the $1.50 shows at places like the Davis, Pickwick and that one on Touhy in Niles for great movies after they had been out for about 2 months.

and I think they are wrong about the superhero movies

There are some that have excellent stories and good acting. I think the problem is that there are many that are just living off the good work of the leaders. People will go to see ANYTHING in the genre with no discernment between Dark Knight and Green Lantern.
