Watching my jock sons and their teammates not really interested like before and after 12 years of following them around, plus crazy cable costs, I tend to agree.

It isn't must see programming like the old days either.

Especially in the winter.

Baseball will probably die first.

They've been saying that since soccer was first touted as the next big thing. In the seventies. They were only half right, sadly.

My generation is the last on that actually likes the game and the last that just played it for fun. I'm basically 40. That gives the game another 30 or 40 years. Television and stadiums numbers will decline drastically before then.

I'm more or less the same age as you, and I think you're spot on about the last generation to play baseball for fun. The last time I saw neighborhood kids getting together and playing baseball for the hell of it was probably in the mid-90's. Also, the World Series has become like the NBA or Stanley Cup Finals, a regional event.

Imo it's more than that though. Kids play video games or watch their feeds or video replays over watching actual games. And with rare exceptions, don't have the team and city allegiance of past generations.

They love players not teams.

I will NEVER understand the joy someone gets from watching someone else play a video game.

Funny thing is that I remember enjoying that in the 80s through 92.

I was surprised to see a number of empty seats yesterday in the upper regions of Soldier Field.

The Jags and Falcons games were ghost towns. Jets were not much better

That probably didn't look good in the new massive MetLife.
The Falcons also have a billion $ + new stadium.....
I've noticed the empty seats too.
Just wait until Spurs curtain off the upper tiers of the spanking-new White Heart Lane.
Sorry, wrong kind of 'football'.

Looks like half the fun of attending a game at that new Vegas stadium is not knowing which spectator bursts into flames next, just like the ants scurrying out of the anthill under my magnifying glass 40 years ago...

My boys, both mid-twenties, went to see a movie last Sunday, just before kickoff of the early game.

Many younger folks today can't even be bothered to watch the road while driving around in their car, and they are expected to spend an entire day watching a game?

baseball really lends itself to casual fandom. If you like going to a park in the summer and having a picnic, you like being a casual fan. Cubs have proven this over decades.

The key is to keep the price of admission reasonable.

yeah but they are plugged in to it different ways. Kids still know obscure players because of video games and those are making good money for the leagues

My company has made some younger hires recently and there was some surprising passion there for baseball. I think there is hope.

Parents all over greater Washington D.C. are likely preparing to take their children to see the long-awaited “Frozen 2,” which debuts in movie theaters this weekend.

Incredibly, it would cost less to take the kids to Sunday’s Washington-Detroit matinee.

As of this writing on Friday afternoon, there are numerous tickets for 1 p.m. kickoff at FedEx Field between 1-9 Washington and the 3-6-1 Lions going for $12 on SeatGeek. That’s not a typo: $12.

Tickets for a 1:30 p.m. showing of “Frozen 2” on IMAX at the AMC Magic Johnson Capital Center 12 are $13.99 for adults and $12.49 for children.

The NFL is such a better game on TV. Going to the game may be for the experience, but if you have a decent TV it's much more enjoyable. Although sometimes on TV they just follow the ball and you don't see what everyone is doing on the play.

I think a fair amount of people are emotionally numb to the NFL. The only league I have an emotional attachment to anymore is the MLB. Oddly, the White Sox World Series title somehow killed my emotional attachment to the Bears and when it comes to the rest of the NFL, the only thing I care about is my fantasy football team. The only other sports event that I think would register for me on an emotional level would be a DePaul trip to the Final Four.
