Upon reflection...and actually reading the rules...it was 100% the correct call. Zero question about it.

Rule 5.09(a)(11):

Quote:
In running the last half of the distance from home base to
first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he
runs outside (to the right of ) the three-foot line, or inside
(to the left of ) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment
in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at
first base
, in which case the ball is dead; except that he
may run outside (to the right of ) the three-foot line or
inside (to the left of ) the foul line to avoid a fielder
attempting to field a batted ball;

Rule 5.09(a )(11) Comment (Rule 6.05(k ) Comment): The
lines marking the three-foot lane are a part of that lane and a
batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot
lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is per-
mitted to exit the three-foot lane by means of a step, stride,
reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole
purpose of touching first base.

The runner clearly ran through the glove, which was in fair territory, prior to touching first.

His foot was damn near on the bag. It was an infield hit waiting to happen , unless there was going to be an E called on the crappy throw.

Its hard to believe a guy can hit the first base bag with his foot in the DEAD CENTER of the base, yet be called out for being out of the baseline. If that throw is 2' further towards second base, this is a non issue.

Fortunately, this was all moot as the W's won the game.

It was really close...but he did take the glove out before touching the bag. Glad it didn't do anything but cause a bunch of people to become aware of a fairly rare instance of the rule.

Yeah it was technically the right call based on the rule.

Obviously the rule is shit and needs to be changed.

Yep. 1st base is in fair territory. It's ridiculous that it's the runners responsibility to stay in foul territory right up to and including his last step.

Hook slide apparently.

In the last 45' the runner should be making a beeline for first and everyone knows, since Little League, that you stay in foul territory or chance getting called out for interference. Sure you can chance blocking the throwing lane for the catcher and hope he doesn't throw the ball...but that's the risk you take.

The idea of installing the Orange Foul Bag for runners is ludicrous, IMHO.

It would also save some collisions with pitchers covering

Honestly, I don't really give a shit. The running lane comes into effect once a year for teams. I understand the need for the lane because, I dunno, Bunting Horatio Three Finger Dixon took advantage. But it's kinda obsolete these days

Houston just gets everything right. The Greinke trade looks like it will bring them another WS. I would like a 1-0 Game 7.

What a fucking performance from Greinke. That’s why the Astros traded for him. Baseball’s beautiful.
