How involved are you...I'm trying to let my son do the essays himself without any intervention but trying to give him advice on the topics is tricky. One of the Notre Dame choices is "Defend an unpopular opinion you hold." I think he picked a bad opinion, but the ones I suggested would sound like they came from an adult and not a teenager.

I was surprised at how short they are supposed to be...only 150-200 words.

I'm an editor and a task master

I wrote the one to Catholic University of America because I started out there so I had some intimate knowledge of the place but he is getting in there even if he wrote a poor essay.

We are a no, ND house.

I received a unique request post appolication from Holy Cross asking for a parent recommendation. Do you think they would consider it blasphemous if I only wrote "This is my beloved son, on whom my favor rests"?

Not sure if this is the right section, but my autistic brother would have been 42 today. Happy Birthday James.

Broke out the winter coat for the first time today. Reached in the pocket and found a bank envelope with a $50 bill inside!

I purposefully leave cash in weird pockets in my winter coats because of how much I enjoy that feeling. Thanks, me-from-the-past!

My college roommate used to “hide money from himself” by putting it in a different pocket of his wallet.

It worked. He never spent it.

A good team would have won all three.

Congrats, tho. Enjoy your trip to the White House for cold Big Macs and watered down diet coke.

This video just showed up on Youtube and it reminded me of a good story.

In the fall of 2001 my partners and I went to buy horses at the Cottonwood Farm auction out in Big Rock, Illinois. Three of the biggest buyers were my partner, Brian, Erv Miller, and Robin Schadt. They were all pretty friendly and so they got together prior to the sale and loosely split up the horses that they wanted so we wouldn't all be bidding against each other. That meant we were mainly just going up against the Joe Anderson crew and a few odd guys here and there.

My favorite broodmare in Illinois was a horse named Broadway Siren. Brian used to mock me because I liked to say she was from the family of the great Savilla Song. After Brian died his dad told me, "Brian said the Vernonshire guys really opened my eyes to that family." I took that as a great compliment. Sort of like Babe Ruth saying you taught him something about hitting.

Anyway, we tried to buy Broadway Siren's foal every year. We had had good success with a horse named She's The Reason and Charley Choo Choo who died prematurely of complications from EPM, but we really hit the jackpot with Diamond Man who was the best horse in Illinois in 2001:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymZ1kWwqlzc

So I went to the sale fully intending to buy her foal of 2000, Only Choice. I needed partners, but I had a regular group that I bought with- Brian and his family and a real good guy named Roger Samson. But Brian had picked up this Canadian owner named Bob Waxman who didn't partner with anybody. This guy was a really sleazy scrap metal salesman: https://www.solidwastemag.com/waste-man ... 000036274/

Right before the sale Brian pulls me aside and says, "Bob wants to buy the Broadway Siren." My first reaction was, "Fuck Bob." Brian then told me I didn't have as much money as Bob, which of course was true. I was getting a little hot under the collar now. I told Brian I don't care if Waxman outbids us but you don't have to train the horse for him. "Tell Bob that you have owners who buy that mare's colt every year and you can't fuck them."

Well, Brian, smooth talking motherfucker that he was, goes into full placation mode with me. He says, "Look, let Waxman have that big gray colt. I like Cold Sweat better. You and I will buy Cold Sweat and beat Bob's brains in with him." I didn't know if Brian really preferred the other colt or not. I just knew I didn't, so I was very unhappy. But Brian had made me a lot of money and we were good friends so I went along.

As we were training these horses down in Florida that winter, Only Choice was clearly better than Cold Sweat. In fact, he looked better to me than Diamond Man ever did. We ended up having to cut Cold Sweat to get him to pay attention. When they started racing Only Choice was really strong. Cold Sweat was okay, but I didn't think he could beat the other guy.

In August we shipped them down to DuQuoin for the Governor's Cup. What do you know? We got up to win the elimination at 10/1. I didn't have a dime on him. But we beat Only Choice and my buddy Jimmy Kezios's horse, Democritus. (I love how the goof butchers Democritus's name in the post parade. )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrJ8on6bbiM

The next week we went for the big cash, $100,000. We beat Only Choice again. I could not believe it. Fuckin' Brian. R.I.P. B.P.

I just found out that our office is closed on Black Friday and Christmas Eve, and both are paid days. First time in my working career I have been off both days without using PTO.

And yes, my 'GOOD GUY IRL BUYS DRINKS' is still valid for Friday.

Whenever my son and I would see David DeJesus on Cubs post game, we'd laugh as he reminds us of Justin. Justin is pretty solid for hitting...my son decided to focus on pitching, so we went in a different direction after 15u.

We started working with Justin when he ran the White Sox ACE program until 8 years ago. I'll give him credit for the best college interest my oldest got. A really good guy.

Wife and I moved to a new place about a month ago. On Tuesday morning she is try to put something away on a high shelf and a rolled up piece of paper falls down. She unfurls it and finds three reproduction maps of the area we live from 1837, 1927 and 1976. It appears that they were part of the Bicentennial celebration around here. I dropped an email to the historical society to see if they knew what these were but I think we are going to end up framing them and putting them on display.

Did your son or sons play college ball? I ask because it tore my heart out not watching my kid play as I was highly involved up until that point.

My high school alma mater Warren Township is in the 8A semi finals this weekend. Might drive down to Gurnee to take in the game. This is the schools furthest run for a title in its history.

Good luck.... I guess they're expecting around 4000-5000 people at the game. O'Toole's on Grand is having a watch party, too...

I think I'm going to go with my son to watch his alma mater, Willowbrook, take on Mt Carmel.
