At first I thought the shortage was a marketing tactic, but for it to take this long for them to get the sandwiches back on the menu seems way too long for this to be planned. Whoever didn't anticipate demand properly cost this company more money than Darryl Morey cost the NBA.

The shortage of the product was the lesser of two problems. The staffing at the individual stores was the major problem. Individual stores require having one more person on staff during shifts, as the making of these sandwiches requires 100% of an employees' attention. Most Popeye's run extremely lean, and were not able to just take a currently existing PT employee and cover all the new shifts.

Each Popeye's had to hire 1-2 new employees and get them trained.

I know a DM.

I do not doubt that is the case. With any new product, training is essential.

My question would be why didn't Popeye's know about this going in and beef up their training and/or hiring? I assume most managers have certain labor costs/% to maintain, and going over those levels without the requisite sales can be very problematic. To me it would have made sense to reduce some of those labor percentages to allow for extra employees. This would have presented an opportunity to cross train, as well find PT employees who might be looking to take on a second job to make some extra money for the holidays, which is probably one of the company's busy times where they need to add staff anyway.

We're not getting into details I don't know, but from what I understand, the performance of Popeye's from store to store can very greatly compared to the variances one might find at a McDonald's or Taco Bell. I think those under-performing stores had the biggest issues with this. Franchise HQ probably did have to adjust things like labor costs and what have you.

Finding workers for fast foot joints has been extremely difficult for a few years now. Every restaurant I've been through seems to have a Now Hiring sign boldly attached to the drive-thru menu or doors leading in. I think the challenge is greater than just 'hire another applicant' since there are no applicants.

Does it really take much training to make this sandwich?

The training is the basic employee training - not training to make the sandwich. These new employees still have to know how to do all tasks...as the employee making the sandwiches each shift will rotate, of course. No one will have the title 'chicken sandwich maker.'

Popeye's had to wait for the roll-out until most stores had the proper labor / infrastructure.

Just tried it for the first time today (the spicy version). As much as I like Chick Fil A and thought it was the best around, I'd say the Popeye's is better.

Wendy's has solid chicken offerings. McDonald's has really good tenders. Popeye's has great tenders too. I enjoy the KFC sliders with the Mayo and dill pickle slice too.

Well how does adding significantly more chicken sandwiches to society help the matter?

Chicken sandwiches don't kill people (At least not immediately). People who wait an hour for chicken sandwiches kill people.

Tried both spicy and regular today. Solid sandwich, but much more breading than a Chik-fil-et. The spicy version simply has spicy sauce, not spicy breading. The Wendy’s spicy chicken has the spice in the breading, which I prefer.

Bottom line: great sandwich, quality chicken, but not worth driving out of your way or waiting an hour for. Certainly not worth getting maimed or killed.

How come they can put a man on the moon, but that can't invent a chicken sandwich worth getting killed for?

Tried one of each today. Good, not great. Agreed that the spicy sauce is inferior to spicy breading

I had the regular one on Thursday and that was my takeaway. It does probably suck for the employees that could half-ass it before this thing came out and now they really have to work non-stop.

In the suburbs, there aren't many better options for fried chicken. Brown's is mostly gone (no thanks to Murph) and no one goes to KFC anymore. Popeyes may not be the best, but its certainly better than the other options.
