Let the record show that I do want Pace fired post-haste.

In.

There is zero excuse for not having a sitdown with a QB with the college pedigree of Watson.

He is an idiot and I don't want him anywhere near picking the next QB.

It's not so much that Pace didn't draft Watson as it is the following two items;

-He gave Glennon a truckload of money. I know it's not my money, but salary cap and whatever

-He drafted (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky and moved a ton of draft capital in doing so. The trade and the pick was a franchise altering failure.

didn't we say all along that his future would be tied to the Mitch pick

Well yeah, but that's kind of a "duh" observation.

Only because he traded up.

This is also just fucking mind-blowing.

Fox, who rated Watson as his top quarterback, didn’t learn of Pace’s intention to select a quarterback until the morning of the draft, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation. Other prominent figures in the organization received the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky news from Roger Goodell’s mouth as the NFL commissioner announced the pick on live TV from a stage in Philadelphia.

For some at Halas Hall, a bit of confusion accompanied the excitement of the pick. Mike Glennon — signed 48 days earlier, guaranteed $18.5 million on a three-year contract and promised the steering wheel for the 2017 offense — had been sent as one of the guests of honor to a team-sponsored public draft party at Soldier Field. While there, he watched the Bears select his replacement.

To be fair to Pace the article proves that there was no consensus best QB prospect in the draft. I personally agree with Gruden's take regarding the lack of a sample size for Mitch and why a seemingly hot prospect like him didn't even start for a school that isn't known for its football program. The next metric to judge Pace is to see how quick he divorces (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. You can't continue to invest in sunk costs - move on and move on quickly. That's all he can and should do.

The first quarterback off the board hasn't been a guy who you feel great about leading your team for the next 10 or 15 years in a long time.

There is Mahomes and a few good young quarterbacks. Everyone else is serviceable or bad. Once the older guys retire in the next couple of years the NFL is in trouble at the quarterback position.

Pace is an idiot and should be fired but he won't be. What did he get - 3 more years on his deal?

So what are the contract options next year with Mitch? I assume keep him on his rookie contract and bring in a vet plus draft/sign a developmental guy and create competition?

No way in hell do you pick up Mitch's option.

Per Google 9.2M.

He will be back although everyone from Phillips on down should be axed but it's the Bears so it won't happen.

Andy Dalton and Cam Newton are the names everyone is floating.

Can't say I'm optimistic since Pace is a total clown and is in way over his head.

That doesn't look right for an option year.

I don't want Cam or Andy or Mariotta. Draft a kid in the second and pick up an UFA.

He will be here next year. The Bears get zero cap savings by trading/releasing him.

Outside of Mahomes there isn't a young quarterback that I would want to lockup for the next 10 or 15 years. I imagine that some would throw Watson up there with Mahomes but that's it. This isn't a great crop of young quarterbacks.

People said that five years ago and it wasn't any more true then. Mahomes, Watson, and Lamar Jackson all look good. Wentz looks more than serviceable and Dak is having his best year as a pro.

The NFL QB position will be fine. Just like always there will continue to be a few elite QBs, some good ones, and a bunch of replaceable ones.

Nas, it makes no difference. Pace has already proven he cannot evaluate the QB position.

Forgot about Jackson. It was true 5 years ago. The legends just extended their careers. They can't play until they're 50. Where is Winston? Luck? Mariota? Others?

Peterson doesn't even trust Wentz. He's closer to the serviceable category than he is to great. Do you want Dak as your quarterback for the next decade? Of course not.

Winston and Mariota suck. Luck retired.

I gave you three great young QBs and listed two more that are under 26 and playing well. Next year maybe 1 or 2 more joins the list. Maybe Baker turns it around once he gets a real coach this offseason.

The QB position is fine. It's always 2-4 great ones, 4-6 more good ones, and the rest of the league looking to improve that position. It's been that way my whole life and there's nothing to suggest it won't continue being like that. Russell Wilson is going to be an MVP caliber QB for at least 3-4 more years too.
