I guess he's not going to the Yankees.

All fine and good....still need a RF and a left handed starting pitcher.

they overpaid him by at least 10 million

He would never have gotten 3 years guaranteed on the open market. That was a stupid move.

People forget how bad he was for important stretches of the season last year and looked finished.

"bad" is a relative term. Just like "trending downward"

He had a rough May in terms of avg and OB%, but clubbed ten homers. He was brutal for about 2-3 weeks after the AS break, but still put up an a .940 OPS in Aug and Sept.

White Sox always good for a laugh. Going against most savvy baseball thinking dishing out 3 and 4 year contracts for guys in their early 30s.

He's a made man in the organization. Money for him comes out of a different budget.

I don't think there is anything terrible about this contract. I was of been ok with a 3yr $60M deal. I am shocked that the Sox are spending. I am wondering which SP they are going after.

Yeah, it's a good contract for both sides. Abreu is still producing and proving his value. You need that reliable RBI machine with the guys who will be ahead of him.

Abrue's 1.9 fWAR was good 14th in MLB first baseman between Danny Santana and Luke Voit. He's the type of player aspiring teams look to replace, not extend. Good job Sox

Five months ago, you said 3yr $45mil would get him. The Sox game him $5mil more, 4 of which is deferred. I don't the Sox overpaid by that much.

The market is scary for aging DHs. He will be 33 years old. That will put him at over 100 million in earnings for his career and I really think he wants to stay in one place. He seems to be having more fun with these guys than any other year I have seen him.

I may have quibbled and made half of that last year achievable with pretty easy performance measures from the first two years (don't get hurt, don't pull a George Bell). But as constructed it's not unreasonable if they really want him around to mentor the younger Cuban players.

Liked the 1 yr, $17.8 mil much, MUCH better. It was STUPID to go any further.

Correct analysis. White Sox overrated his market. Nobody would give him this deal in free agency.

Wrong. He is valuable to a locker room full of Cubans that love him. His money will be the same or better than all the dollars your fucking Cubs overpay the messiah Rizzo that is not very good at baseball anymore.

I never know how to value that whole experience, respect of teammates, quality. I'm sure they all look up to him, but I don't think his presence is going to change their trajectory. These guys either have the physical abilities to hack it at the major league level and the mental ability to adjust back to the league when it adjusts to them, or they don't. Whether Jose is there or not, that's not going to change.

IMO, this deal is more about him mentoring and integration of some of these guys. Maybe like 70% the player 30% mentoring.

50 million is a lot to mentor people.

If that is the reason then the deal is horrible

This guy gets it. If someone can explain to me how Abreu makes Eloy better defensively or raises his OBP I'll buy this mentoring bullshit.

If Abreu fucks up our march to a WS because Daddy Reinsdorf thinks his mentoring is somehow key....
If he takes playing time, if he won't DFA him, this is my fear in 2021 and 2022.

1st off, don't think they are gonna march toward a WS. IF a WS doesn't happen within 2yr window, I would expect both Moncada and Giolito to be traded. No way they are gonna pay either of those guys with Reiny at the helm. 2nd, IF they make it to a WS, I don't think Jose will be in anyone's way, just like Konerko at the end.

1st in RBIs in the entire American league. 30+ home runs and .280+ BA. Leader in the clubhouse. I'll take Jose for the next three years or so happily. Its going to be a very fun year. Now onto two starting pitchers, some relief help, and a right fielder. Can't wait. :bom: :bom: :bom:

Not as bad as $126 million to lead a locker room pep rally.
