Ratings in the American market setting historic lows again this season after being in the toilet last season. Pack up the league and sell it to Chiner.
It feels like the NBA has been mortgaging the future for some time now and the bill finally came. No one wanted to talk about it very much at the same time that journalists dug in hard on the other three leagues + NCAA because being or not being an NBA fan is so pregnant with meaning in a way that no other league fandom is, and no one in media wants to be seen as on the wrong side of that.
The actual games are much more suspenseful and hence should drive up the ratings. I wonder how many of those games have featured the Warriors? no one wants to see them this year. They have been on a number of national telecasts already.
This isn't about being an SJW either. The NBA didn't take off because they were a Social Justice League. Guys like Dr. J, Jordan, Bird and Magic were about as Apolitical as it comes.
The biggest problem that the NBA has and has had is that it Markets players and "Markets" rather than Teams and the Game. It works when you have marketable players that play in big markets. Not so much otherwise.
I have always felt that they need to get away from that model but how could you argue with it when the growth of the league occurred on the backs of Superstar players that happened to play in large markets?
