See, this is silly. The Sox have wasted money on a bunch of mid-level free agents over the past decade or so.

The bigger issue is, they are unable to sign players. I doubt it is a straight $120M. I am sure it is like $96M with a bunch of unobtainable incentives they can control somehow from him achieving.

Is that because it happened with Machado who is looking like a pretty bad contract?

You ready to call that after one year as he enters his prime?

It was both he and Harper. They hosted Harper, and we never heard anything outside of Hahn bragging that the Sox could land both MM and Harper in the same offseason. The MM contract would not of been bad for the Sox. He would of be a YUGE upgrade over Yolmer. Probably would of paid for his contract with merch sold within the first few days of him signing.

From what I could tell the White Sox simply didn't want Harper.

I would bet money, they have almost a quarter of that contract paid from increased ticket sales, merch, and marketing from him signing. If they were not interested, why did they host him?

As we saw last year, they definitely did overpay for free agents. They spent nearly the same amount that Machado made on Herrera, the Machado friends, Nova etc.

If you stack shit real high, all you have is a tall stack of shit.

You look at this rebuild and you just know its not going to be sustainable. Moncada is going to be one of those very expensive players in just a few years and they will try to chisel with him before losing him.

There was an article during the year that the contract was more than justified by the increased revenues that resulted.

Wheeler turned down Minnesota's supposedly better offer too.

Here's a positive spin. If the redass MadBum is truly a redass, he doesn't give a fuck where his redass pitches as long as he gets paid. So pay the man

Half his starts are going to be in the bandbox that is the Cell while facing a DH . I’d be very leery about how impactful he would be .

I refer you to Dolphin's post about the big picture. Also, we have good young pitching. Bumgarner can influence those guys.

History is not kind to those kind of mega contracts and one year in it he clearly was a letdown.

It's too early to call it but we would be concerned if he was on the White Sox.

The offseason is not over because Zach Wheeler signed and Cole Hamels got an insane amount of money today.

The Sox went out and spent money to get the best catcher available. According to Ken Rosenthal, they offered at least $118.1 million to a starting pitcher.

If they come away with nobody, or a bunch of C-level free agents, then yeah I'll be pissed. But if they have already offered that much dough to a pitcher, whats another $10 or $20 million to get a stud like MadBum or Cole here? Or maybe they get Castellanos or another big OF stick.

I wouldn't be. We would have an all star level infield at every position and Timmy would be training to fill that RF issue. As we discussed last year, that contract wouldn't have even kept them from signing another big one this season and still kept within a reasonable budget.

I mean, wouldn't it be something if JR for just one time in his 40+ years of ownership went nuts on a FA contract? Just once don't be fiscally sound. The guy rock hard going into his investor meetings every year with a dividend check. Meanwhile, not one of them need that dividend and they have all made thousands of percent on their original investment if they ever sell their shares.

How does the group not go into the board meeting one year and just demand that he spend on a championship?

Watch them trade for Sonny Gray, and give up Madrigal or Vaughn doing so.

Have you all ever considered that maybe no matter how much money was on the table, that All Star caliber Caucasian players want no part of playing for the White Sox?

Wheeler will probably make up the difference in increased endorsement opportunities. Who the fuck wants to target their pitchman to only be relevant to dose guys dat live over by Summit and Justice?

I'm getting sick of this, though. I can't root for another team, but this low-effort thing makes me wonder why I bother.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes that the White Sox, who’ve been zeroed in on Wheeler, have yet to even enter into negotiations with Bumgarner’s camp.

I am. He was one of the most over-valued people in the history of free agency. Not enough has been said about what a bad teammate this guy is. He was a problem with the Dodgers and they couldn't wait to get rid of him. SD was silly to spend all of that money on him and my bet is that they will end up paying a lot of his salary when they trade him. The guy is a bad team mate and a very dirty player. I hate dirty players.

I'm not there yet to abandon where this team is headed. I like their moves thus far. I also did not want Wheeler, Coles, or Strasberg. I want Bumgarden and another good lefty. There are good pitchers in free agency that they can get and afford, including a reliever or two. They can quit until things clear up a bit to add a right fielder. It shouldn't take a lot of money to lock up a guy for a couple of years that will fill the bill.

I still think that they just might give Madrigal a look in center field before this stuff is over and move Robert to right field where he just might be better suited. Center fielders do not need great arms and Madrigal certainly has the speed to play the position. Madrigal is a excellent athlete and could probably play 2nd, short, or center field.

There are 29 other teams besides Sox that didn’t get Wheeler or Hamels. Slow down the panic.

History is not kind to those kind of mega contracts and one year in it he clearly was a letdown.

It's too early to call it but we would be concerned if he was on the White Sox.

I wouldn't be. We would have an all star level infield at every position and Timmy would be training to fill that RF issue. As we discussed last year, that contract wouldn't have even kept them from signing another big one this season and still kept within a reasonable budget.

I doubt that Timmy would have been too happy to give his job to Machado for starters. And Machado pretty much is a clubhouse cancer. And where exactly would this team have gone last year with him? Five games better? What does that gain them? They still would need starting pitching. Now they will have Robert and I'd take him right now in my line-up over Machado. RIGHT NOW. So they didn't spend any money last year and they will have a line-up at least as good as if they brought Machado on board and have a shit load more flexibility to add pitching and perhaps a right fielder.
