Quote:
"Since the league went to 32 teams, which was when the Texans came in in 2002, my ideal suggestion -- which has never been put forth in front of anybody important -- I don't think there should be divisions," Fangio told reporters Wednesday during his press conference. "I think you've got 16 [teams] in each conference, everybody should play each other once. That's 15 games. If you want a 16th game, you play a natural rival from the other conference. You know, Jets and Giants play every year. Eagles-Steelers, Texans-Cowboys, etc. play every year and keep it at 16 games.

"You'll avoid the problem which is going to happen this year where probably an 8-8 team is hosting a 12-4 team. You're going to get the six best teams in each conference and the divisions always flow. There are some that are easy some year, there are some that have a bunch of good teams. That switches back and forth every couple years. I just think it'd be a good way to avoid it."

I actually like the concept...I would say maybe make that extra game a natural rival, though (Bears/Packers, Deadskins/Cowgirls, Vikings/Playoff Wins, etc)

Eh. I would keep it the way it is with just one change- reseed 1-6 based on record. If the Seahawks and 9ers both end up at 13-3 or whatever and they have the best records in the NFC, they should get byes. Winning the division guarantees you a playoff game, but should not necessarily guarantee you host said playoff game.

Like the Cowboys should definitely be on the road as the 6th seed this year.

I wouldn't change a thing. It's the best playoff system in sports. This only comes up like once a decade anyway.

Vic's idea is kind of cool in that each conference would eventually take on its own identity since it would be so minimally exposed to the other. Then, come the Super Bowl, it would be like two different brands of football coming together. It'd be fun as a novelty but over time it'd get boring.

The current system is fine but the idea of reseeding based on record is a good one.

This part of it is definitely what I like the most. That's what I used to like about baseball, too...

I think the system is fine. You're playing to win your division so you get a home playoff game. It makes perfect sense. If the glamour division didn't all shit the bed at once, no one would take issue with it. It's the most no-bullshit playoff system we have -- you don't have 10/16 cannon fodder teams like the NBA, you don't have 8s beating 1s on hot goalies, traps, and matchups like the NHL, and you don't have 95-win teams losing one-offs like MLB. If the worst thing that happens is an 8-8 team hosts a playoff game once a decade, we're fine.

All they have to do is say that if a team is 8-8 or worse, they don't get to host the first round.

Lots of truth here.

Its also a bit ironic that the only playoff victory of Jay Cutler's career came against a 7-9 Seahawks team

Exactly. Quit trying to "fix" things, or prevent certain scenarios. The randomness/quirkiness of it is fun. And it only happens once every few years anyway. Who cares.

I also HATE the the whole "must play a division opponent" in Game 16. It was meant to do one thing, but instead does the opposite in most cases. A meaningless game which means you only have 5 meaningful division games each year instead of 6.

Nah. I like the way it is. I like playing our midwestern teams 2 times a year. I'm sure all the fans in the other divisions feel the same way.

Also, I like seeing AFC teams. His way you would never play any. Except for one team a year. You could go 15 years without playing a certain AFC team. So you could miss playing a great QB cuz he'll have retired.

The way it is now you get an entire AFC division every year. 4 games. 12 vs NFC teams. Which is perfect I think.

Yeah, that's the other thing. Aside from the playoffs not really being broken, the scheduling matrix is a work of art.
