I was a big fan of the orange and the fruit punch.

Black cherry. And they were always on sale for some weird price like 17 cents each.

Yeah...black cherry was good, too.

well fuck my 8 year old taste buds. do you recall the root beer sentimentally?

I got your "sentimentally" right here!

There'd be a case of Glen Rock at every Cub Scout meeting and birthday party from 3rd grade to 7th grade. I figured it was a northern Lake County thing. It was pop, which was cool...but it still sucked. Musta been cheap as hell.

Cheerwine tastes like rancid Robitussin at first. I refused to take a second sip.

Glen Rock was a Waukegan thing more than any other thing. as a kid, I didn't care. I'd drink a 3-liter of Red Pop if it was in front of me.

I don't remember the tastes, just the joke or riddle at the bottom of the cans.

There's a mid-sized brewery in my wife's hometown in Minnesota, August Shells. During Prohibition, they did all they could to stay solvent, and brewed root beer in the beer-making equipment, kegged it, and sold it locally. You can still go to the grocery stores and fill a milk jug with 1919 root beer from a tap, and man, is it good.

(Shell's has a complete packaging system for kegs, bottles and cans, so they do a lot of brewing/packaging for the microbreweries trying to get into markets, in addition to MANY interesting beers of their own)

In college, my roommate from Wheaton would bring Sweet Valley Cola from Aldi's- only $0.19 per can, and mixes well with grain alcohol, which never mixed well with me...

I splurged and mixed it with Ocean Spray's(?) Cran-Grape. So smooth it got a hungry(& stupid) friend arrested for attempted shop lifting after an actual toga party.

Along those lines, one of the all time great flavors of soda pop is created when Welch's grape juice and Canada Dry ginger ale are mixed 50/50.

Canada Dry 50/50 is also pretty awesome.

Thanks for your support (we grow Concord grapes for Welch's juice)

I have never heard of the grape/ginger ale combo, but will be trying it this weekend, for sure!

Does it require the addition of grain alcohol, as RR and I used to enjoy(?)?

Grain alcohol or vodka is optional.

Adjust the ratio of ginger ale and grape juice to taste.

It works fine with Sprite too, it's just better with ginger ale.

Do it with white grape juice for the kids and they can pretend it's champagne.

Ah, Sweet Valley Cola. That brings back memories. It, along with Meisterbrau beer were staple beverages due to our poor college student budget.

We tended towards the Altes or Goebel beer markets- the short, brown bottles came in a waxed cardboard case that only cost $0.05 per bottle deposit, for some reason, (vice the $0.10 MI deposit for all other beer vessels). A case was typically $5.29 plus the $1.20 deposit put you out the door for $6.49 and on the road to HangoverTown!

Michigan fought the Aldi invasion with a unit pricing law- each individual item needed a price tag affixed, and Aldi then was more pallet-full-of-boxes-with-one-price-sign oriented. We now have Aldi nearby, and our family loves MANY of their offerings. We are nearly soda free here, my wife and I were heavy pop drinkers, and it has allowed both of us to gain substantial, life-threatening weight. I'm thinking of going back on the BigSugar train to see if I can shed some pounds. Or, possibly meth, most of those folks look pretty thin...

Definitely good...I just think it's too well known to make the list.

Canada Dry sells a half-ginger ale half-lemonade that's growing on me.

I have a Soda Stream,I like it as you can make your beverage how you like it and the fact that their version of Dr Pepper tastes just like the real thing is a bonus.
