I agree that Collins has a plethora of more complex songs...I went with one where the drumming was a core feature of the song, as I believe the OP was asking. If I'm going purely with best/favorite drumming songs (excluding those already mentioned), I'd say:

Rush - La Villa Strangiato
Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
Dream Theater - Learning to Live
Symphony X - Revelation
King Crimson - Starless
Genesis - Supper's Ready
Steve Vai - Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite

The Time cover by Beneath 51 is NOT on this list.

I'm not a guy who fetishizes musicianship. For me, the playing exists only to serve the song. But if we're talking about technical prowess, I can't believe we're this far into the thread without anyone mentioning Bonham playing the Purdie shuffle on "Fool in the Rain" and then kicking into that fast samba section and back out again. What the fuck, Frank!

Bonham's work on Communication Breakdown is a little awkward. In places it works, in others it doesn't. Maybe he finessed it too much?

It's not a sacred cow as far as drumming tracks. Dave Grohl could have done better on the song.

Dave Grohl could have licked my balls better. The guy can't even play without a click.

Ha ha, JORR.

Communication Breakdown was still early on for Zep and for Bonham. They were still establishing themselves. Bonham's mastery would come later.

I'll tell you what drumming sucks balls. Lars Ulrich on One. He chooses the most awkward beat for such a great song. It's not even a beat.

To your point, yes, the drums are excellent on "Fool in the Rain". Bonham makes the song. It's a unique Zeppelin Song, one for the Smithsonian of Drum Virtuosity.

That is a great part of fool in the rain for sure. I think either 312 or Hatchet has mentioned it many times in these types of discussions.

He moves to the sound of a different drummer. As for Grohl and the click I read an article in the past month or so that basically no one does not use a track anymore. Especially recording. Studio time without a click wastes tons of money. I couldn't believe to a man the reason the Chicago guys gave for canning their original drummer in the documentary was that he could not play to a track. The old fucks couldn't keep time anymore.

And I know it’s been mentioned previously, but Fool in the Rain was part of the inspiration for Rosanna. In that same vein, Lido Shuffle is another gem by Porcaro.

I think John Bonham was a little jealous of Bill Ward. He once broke Ward's drum set, and then Bill Ward never let him play on it again.

Bonham liked "Supernaught" from Sabbath. One of the best air drumming tracks ever.

The Lido Shuffle is one of my top guilty pleasures song wise.

The Purdie Shuffle is indeed great, but Bonham's best track- by his own admission and Page's- was Achilles Last Stand.

The Lido Shuffle beat is really fucking hard to play correctly. Easily faked, but Porcaro could just flat-out groove.

Ever been able to play 'Good Times Bad Times', Furious? Keep in mind Bonham did that with a single kick drum, not even a double pedal.
