I lost a great friend to heart failure and cancer this morning. Warren was a Navy veteran and a electronic engineer who worked for a defense contractor for many years. After they both retired his wife and he went on a 2+ year mission to Cameroon and built a trade school for a village there as Catholic Lay Mission Helpers. My family and some of our friends helped pay for supplies while they were there. They were also from Wisconsin and huge Packer fans. I will think about him and pray for him today while watching the game. He is in a better place but this is a tough morning for my wife and I.
It's great to hear about people making their mark...throughout their lives. It's hard to keep it going late in life as the energy drains. Much respect for your friend and thanks for sharing.
It is. Warren's wife, Deanna, almost died while there. She got bit by some bug which carried a virus and contracted a serious illness. The nearest "hospital" was more than 200 miles on roads that are pretty bad. So yeah, what this couple did was inspiring especially at their age. Warren was in charge of building the school and after it was done, he taught many of the villagers basics of carpentry, electricity, and basic math and trade skills. Deanna was the school nurse and taught religion classes and presiding over church services as a kind of deacon. Their story truly is inspiring to me.
