I am pretty disappointed that Bummer didn't go to the White Sox. He probably wanted to hit and the word is that his wife liked Arizona a lot. Still, the price was right and he could have made a difference for this team.

Fuck him and his horse farm. I want a pitcher, not a fucking cowboy. I'm glad we didn't get him.

They do. But here is where I stand. Don't talk about spending and moves and then not sign a single 'big name' pitcher. If Hahn is going to talk the talk, then walk the walk and get somebody in here. Don't give me this "oh we offered more money but Wheeler wanted to stay East." Fine. Sign the next guy.

Or just come out and say, "Look we have Kopech, Dunning, Lopez, Giolito, and others in the minors that are young but we are going to ride with our young guys and see what happens." I'd be totally find if the Sox came out and said that.

Not me. That is not the mark of a smart team. Nor one which wants to win a championship. They need starting pitching help and not just one guy either. They also need some bull-pen help. They have the money. They need to spend some money and not put this in the hands of inexperienced pitchers. NO EXCUSES.

David Price makes a tremendous amount of sense for them but they wont do it unless Boston picks up most of the salary, and Boston picking up the salary defeats the purpose of such a trade for them. Its infuriating.

If you're forced to take that contract then Boston needs to send back a prospect. There are 3rd tier free agents who are better at baseball now.

I agree with you.

Right now, Covey is still in the rotation for next year. That is unimaginable. Now, I think they will fill the roll with some buster who is at least MLB proven.

Sox will spend that same 20+ million they would have given to Wheeler this year on a collection of shit, just like they did last year. Sox love, if nothing else, to waste money on shitty, short term deals.

Dolphin has been tearing it up in this thread.

The fact that Covey is still in the rotation right now is all anyone needs to know about the success of this rebuild right now.

I made a post a few weeks ago about the Sox making moves on the 40 man to prevent players leaving via Rule 5. I remember thinking why the fuck is Covey still on this 40 man roster.

The Sox would have a better chance to win with Sir on the mount of the pile of shit that is Dylan Covey.

There is nothing that guarantees he'll age like Scherzer. In fact there's enough historical evidence to suggest that he won't.

No pitcher is worth that money.

Very reasonable deal there...MadBum hasn't been that good the last 3 years, but that would have been a solid signing for the Sox

Exactly.

17 million a year for him to be a good 2nd/3rd starter on a playoff team.
Wow. This is disheartening

Exactly.
MadBum wasn't ideal, but options are limited. They have no left handed starter at all and that was not stupid money.

It's all a problem

It was. He's not worth $100M even if $15M is deferred. It's ridiculous to suggest that the Sox should just sign anyone regardless of how washed up they are just to say they did it. The Sox are about a year away from being a playoff team.

I'll say this. Despite the team continuing the to suck and the fact that the Sox have trouble getting more than a few games a year with attendance above 25,000, the promo team continues to turn out good stuff. This is the May 16th giveaway;

Still there are other ways to spend money. The Sox had a higher payroll than this ten years ago.

Caution------

The greatest Sox attraction of all times liked the horses.

Not if they add two good starting pitchers and another decent reliever they aren't a year away. Their everyday line-up is as good as there is in all of baseball. It is an impressive team offensively. And who here has said that the Sox "should just sign anyone regardless of how washed up they are"?
You said that Bummer was not worth the money. I say he was. There are also some guys on the market that are proven starting pitchers that the Sox need to go hard afterward. There is no excuse for them to stand pat on their pitching. Cleveland will be much weaker next season and Minn. is also weaker. THe Sox will minimally be a wild card contender and a contender for their division. ITs going to be there for the taking.

No way Ryu comes here as he will be getting paid. I doubt they pony up for Keuchel either. But yeah, plenty of arms left on the "clearance rack". But Reinsdorf wants to win. Just a shit period in Chicago sports right now.

Ryu is gonna get $20 million per for 5 years.

Sox should be able to pay that no problem but of course they won't.

He didn't get 20 and neither will Ryu.

I expect him to get a similar annual average but less years. Bumgarner was incredibly affordable at 17 million per. 3 for 50 sounds about right for Ryu.
