This isn't a team that can win the WS, so I would no to trades giving up top prospects.

Should trade Madrigal now. He'll be a solid player, but nothing special. Perfect trade chip before he gets exposed at the big league level.

Yeah it's fine as a back of the rotation guy.

If it ends up being the only thing they do to address pitching then it's bad.

Agreed. I've always liked Gio. Steady vet. Good 4th starter but that's it. And he was on the DL last years for 2 months due to a dead arm.

Excellent signing. He was in the top three of the guys that remained after Bummer was lost as far as I am concerned. He knows how to pitch and get outs.

I think that the next pitcher will be via trade not free agency. They may indeed go for Price and bring in that young left fielder as part of it. It will depend a lot on how much Boston will pay on Price's contract, though. I still think also that they will be talking to the CUbs regarding Quintana.

They weren't looking for a long term answer. Shouldn't have been. They will be hoping that some of their young guys develop. But Gio and whoever the next guy they sign will provide 2-3 years of solid mature starting pitching. It is a good plan. All around this has been a great off season.

Really? They will put one of the top three line-ups in all of baseball onto the field next season and they just added a solid middle of the order starting pitcher. They will also have the home-run leader in all of baseball in Jimenez, the Rookie of the Year in Robert and probably 4-5 All-Star players. This team is going to be headed for the play-offs right now and they are not yet done. Add in Kuechel or Price and a top notch relief pitcher, and they will win the division and be a legit World Series contender.

They probably offered it but Bummer wasn't looking for only money. I really think that he wanted to hit and live out west. I respect that. He was also used to that division and probably wanted to keep the same batting adversaries that he was used to.

They are really pretty close to being a legit contender. One more starter and a good reliever. This is going to really be a great season. 8) 8) 8)

Nah. Don't do it. He will be a 180-200 hit per season guy and a very good defensive player. Mendick will fill the bill well until he is ready and will also be a valuable player.

He's a better version of Ivan Nova which, if they aren't going to get someone like Ryu, is exactly what they need. Let's face it, this rotation is going to go as far as Giolito, Kopech and Cease can take it. They need those guys (plus continued improvement out of Lopez would be nice) to carry the load here and even splurging $130 million on Wheeler was not going to change the fact that pitching success still hinges on the young arms. Only the likes of Cole could have really insulated us from that danger and anyone upset the Sox aren't spending $325m on a pitching is insane.

Substitute Trout for Abreu and that is likely how the 2020 AL MVP voting will go as well 8)

He will? Why is that? Any player on a baseball team can get hurt. Some get hurt throwing a ball. Some get hit by a pitch. some get hurt stepping in the shower? The kid has played less than one season in major league baseball and hit 31 home runs and had 79 RBIs. Why single him out for somekind of injury?

Look at his history. He is very injury prone. I'd be glad to bet on your prediction that he leads all MLB in HR's next season...

He's a baby. He'll learn. Look. Down the road the guy will probably be their DH. That's OK. But left field is the easiest position in all of baseball to play and you can pretty much hide players out there. And whatever limitations he has will be more than made up for with his bat.

Sure they do. But even with that, he really hasn't played a lot of games. He jumped fast to the majors and when you do that, coaches really do not have much of a chance to work with players on their defense. Like in virtually not. YOu basically have spring training and that is it. It isn't like in high school and college where coaches would teach you. He's from the DR where it is all about hitting. I doubt really that he got any coaching on how to play the outfield whatsoever.

When I was coaching travel ball, we sometimes got into tournaments where we played teams from Mexico and Latin America, even Cuba. A lot of those kids had talent but they were very raw and weak in fundamentals. They also had pretty lousy equipment and the American teams including ours would donate some of our equipment or take up a collection to help them buy stuff.

But these kids hustled their asses off and almost to a person, they could hit. Pitching was very weak though and our team beat them pretty bad.

I'm just saying that the scouting report on Jimenez was that he was a five tool guy. I question that but he can learn and under the guidance of guys like Abreu and the coaching staff, he'll learn. The improvements that he made offensively in less than one season were amazing to me.
