It doesn't cost much for hardware but they can be a nightmare to configure if you have internet via your TV service (Comcast, Uverse...). Back in the days of straight DSL, it was much easier because you could make the router a dumb passthrough (bridge mode) to your own router with VPN capabilities. Linksys used to be the best. If you google up "linksys vpn router uverse", there's a lot of resources out there.
