Eli started 15 seasons if you don't include this one. He missed the playoffs in 9 of 15 seasons and failed to win a single playoff game in 13 of the 15 seasons. He threw 18 TDs and 27 INTs at 32 years old in the middle of his prime. He was never a top 5 QB at any point of his career.

It's ridiculous to call him a HOFer. If he gets elected he will be the worst player that's ever made the HOF.

I wouldn't call him the worst. Joe Namath is in, after all.

So is Dan Fouts

I’ll take Broadway Joe over Eli

Maybe over the first 5 years of his career. After 1969, 1 pro bowl, 1 season playing all 14 games, and a whole lot of bad when he was around. He's a guy whose legacy is better than the reality.

I'd probably consider Fouts over Eli, though.

The ironic thing is any argument that Eli isn't a HOF player has to put Philip Rivers in the HOF.

Different era, different passing rules. so you can't take the stats at face value. Fouts put up incredible numbers given the era. I know get your CallerRube jokes out of the way...

If Eli was this mediocre in the modern passing game, how bad would he have been in the late 70's/early 80's?

Pretty bad, I'm good with leaving Eli out, if you promise to keep Rivers and Stat Paddford out too.

You have to choose though. With playoff success matters and Eli is in it it doesn't matter and they are in.

Yeah I don't really see Rivers as a HOF QB either...marginally better comp percentage, better w/l record, but not by much.

Stat Paddford?

No, you don't. This is the Hall of Fame, I want multiple Superbowls with premium stats and zero clunker seasons.

It's going to be a very small group then.

Did you mean multiple Super Bowl wins?

By this logic, Theo Epstein doesn't belong in the Cooperstown.

You'd have to kick quite a few legit QBs out of Canton as well.

Roethlisberger is the elite QB from that class.

Without being as extreme as Bob, there are a few QB's in Canton that should be booted. Starting with Namath.

I'm down. Just like when B&B trimmed down the basketball HOF. Let's get Lynn Swann out of there too.

I agree. But "zero" clunker seasons means that Peyton, Favre, Aikman, Montana, and possibly Elway all are GONE.

Again, it's the Hall of FAME. Not the Hall of "Meh, pretty pretty good". You can start that Hall if you want, I'll even let you put Harold Baines in.

Not at all. One can easily say that Eli's playoff runs and Rivers' regular season success are respectively necessary but insufficient conditions for the Hall.

You bring up the White Sox more than anybody else on this board.

You also bring up dick sucking more than anyone else on this board.

The "Zero Clunker" idea is dumb...I think it's more important to have multiple elite seasons over a couple of good years and a bunch of meh.

Aikman is very much an interesting QB to me. When he was good, he was great...the stretch from 91-96 is outstanding. His last 4 years were not good. He's in because he's a guy Dallas doesn't win those SB's without. His playoff numbers were terrific.

For Eli, other than the 2011 Super Bowl season, even his playoff stats were mediocre.

You don't have to choose. It's ok to have high standards for the HOF. It doesn't need to be a binary choice of playoffs matter or they don't. Look at the entire body of work - stats when compared to guys in your era, team success, accolades, etc.

If you are a QB and you were never in your entire 15+ year career a serious MVP candidate or an All Pro, I think that's all you need as a strong foundation of an argument to keep a guy out.

Some combination of the two if each is deemed insufficient on its own.
