I think a lot of young point guards call their own number more often late in games when their team's losing. I've noticed Ja Morant in particular will enter the 4th with under 10 points and his team trailing by 20 and then double his point total for the night in one quarter.

It's not a precise garbage time metric but given that both teams are several games below .500 assume more often than not their 4th quarter points are scored against teams with substantial leads:

Trae Young avg points per quarter:
=======================
1st 5.6
2nd 8.6
3rd 6.8
4th 8.8

Ja Morant avg points per quarter:
=======================
1st 3.3
2nd 3.5
3rd 3.3
4th 7.7

Both are top 5 in 4th quarter scoring average in the league. Ja Morant appears to be the king of garbage time stats. Trae Young more of a Patriots style score going into the half and then rack up points toward the end of the game.

Yep. Atlanta has the worst point differential in the league. For them Garbage time often starts somewhere in the 2nd quarter. Usually down 15-20 at that point then Trae starts "getting it going".

Experts around the league (Lowe, McHale, now Russilo and Simmons) are starting to catch onto it now.

Thats why his stats are meaningless.

yeah, if a team gets out to a big lead in the early part of the game Young's probably scoring against 2nd team players for much of the 2nd and maybe all of the 4th quarter.

Memphis has a more balanced offense than the Hawks: Valanciunas, JJ, Dillon Brooks, Brandon Clarke even Melton/Crowder some games. Could be Morant's distributing the points quarters 1-3 and then scoring on his own to close it out.

Yeah and there record is much better and there games are much more competitive.

Morant is playing in Meaningful games whereas Young isn't.

I think in Morant's case its moreso a case of getting it to their best player down the stretch in the hopes of pulling them through but with Young they are trying to help him pad his stats and "get his numbers".

For example they were down 30 against New York early in the 3rd one game and yet he still managed to play 41 minutes. It was obvious what they were on.

There have been a number of games like that.

Barkley makes a case for Butler for the exact reason that LTG makes against Trae. Miami is the surprise team of the NBA and claims Jimmy is why.

If Butler is the primary reason Adebayo is a very close second. That kid has been their best player in a great number of games this year.

He will be in the All Star game too.

Atlanta Might lose 60 games this year.

Their upcoming schedule is murder.

Another game another blowout. Nique taking shots at Trae for icing Collins out. Interesting.

Trae currently at 20 and down 20 at the 8 minute mark. Game over and he will end up with about 35 as he continues to play in garbage time.

Ja has his team in many games, they'll be in the playoffs as the 8. Guy is outstanding

Yeah that kid is simply a hooper. Team just came off a 7 game winning streak.

Just to contrast, Trae's squad has only won 9 games with him in the lineup all season.

I really liked him in college and thought he'd be a star by year 2 or 3.. but thought he'd struggle a lil bit in year one..huge step up from Murray St.. he's even better than I thought.

Trae after finding out the news. He honored Kobe in the game with jersey #8. Also hit a half court buzzer beater at half time and dedicated that to Kobe. Most of all, led his team to a win with 45/14 on 13/24 shooting.

Where's Bob today? This is his post from 1/10 after Trae had a bad game vs Washington.

Rematch was last night and Ice Trae went off, 45/14 on 13/24 shooting. Got the win and the revenge.

I thought it was a fitting tribute to Kobe to not pass the ball and take the turnover instead.
