The HOF is lame. Seriously, you ever been? It's one step above the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame at the Water Tower Place. who fucking cares?

It's pretty simple.

Everyone knows, EVERYONE KNOWS, that the punishment for gambling on baseball is a lifetime ban. This was known for over 80 years when Rose was gambling on the Reds.

It's pretty unequivocal, nobody anywhere ever thought there was wiggle room. After the Black Sox got banned everyone knew the risk of gambling on a game.

Rose knew full well the punishment that awaited him if he ever got caught. He accepted that risk, and when he got caught, his punishment was justly merited out.

To echo what JORR road said. How many games did he leave some starter in the game to get his brains bashed in, or leave a reliever in the game to get destroyed because he wanted a fresh pen the next day when he was laying 5k on the Reds to win. He fucked around with guys careers to sustain his gambling habit. He's a piece of shit.

and we all know the dignity that Rose will bring to the honor should they let him in while he is still alive

His principal incentive to get into the Hall is to monetize it so he can gamble and whore some more

Have the discussion again after he kicks the bucket

We all want to smell the flowers. He earned that right with his performance as a player.

Please elaborate.

I know how insane I am when it comes to something that I am physically competing in. Hell it took effort to turn that off to let my older kids beat me in games when they were younger. I'm confident Pete Rose takes that to another level. He may not have given a shit about things that he wasn't actively competing in but there is no doubt that a crazy guy like that would never purposely lose a game that he was physically involved in.

If you owed a guy six figures that you didn't have and all you needed to do was pitch Ron Robinson instead of Mario Soto in a meaningless September game to get rid of that debt you might.

I might know my horse is razor sharp and in great form to win today. I still can't guarantee that win. A million things can happen in a horse race. But I can make sure the horse doesn't hit the board very easily.

To me, that is a big reach and speculation. Without proof on the part of the investigators, I would doubt that Rose would have done anything like that. Maybe I am wrong but, to me, betting on your team to win is nothing to warrant a lifetime suspension. Not with all of the real cheating that occurred and is still occurring with baseball athletes and PEDs.

I go a step further. Even if he did, it doesn't change what he did as a player. He's not being inducted for what he did as a manager.

I think its naïve to think gambling was limited to his time as a manager.

I don't know how you can say that. Cooperstown is a quaint mountain town in a beautiful location and the Hall is pretty nice. It's underwhelming if you are one those people who think it is some kind of world class shrine. Its a nice visit.

I'll be coaching there this summer at that place that is a bigger scam than Disney

I think it's unreasonable to believe that someone who is that competitive would bet against himself as a player.

you limit it to "as a player" because you know he did it as a manager

A competitive player is an equally competitive manager.

No proof. Sometimes the rush you get from competing you try to replace in other ways.

Whether or not he wagered on his team to lose is irrelevant. Interesting to discuss but ultimately pointless.
His play earned him the right to be in the hall. His gambling lost him the right he earned. That's just tough.
Let it be a lesson. Gamble on the game, tarnish its reputation, and you're banned. No take backs.
If you let him in, theres no disincentive for others to be assbole cheaters and gamblers.

And if you told your kids that they're grounded for a month but let them off after a day or two what message do you send your younger ones?

Agree, he's a degenerate gambler, yes..but he's the ultimate competitor.. you think MJ ever bet against himself?

That's an interesting comparison.
Regardless of Rose's play and his qualifications he earned on the field, Darko is right. He forfeited them all. It really begs the question....what's a bigger piece of Rose's being....gambler or competitor. Given what went down, I'd say gambler.

Michael.....his competitiveness was clearly his biggest trait, but that takes nothing away from him being a pretty serious gambler.

I tire of this debate. The rules are the rules....I don't think we'll ever know the extent of Rose's gambling, but it had to have been HUGE and I have zero doubt it tied to games on the field.

What's worse? Cheating in baseball like what the Astros and other teams have done? Or inducing steroids and HGH into your body to improve you ability to hit home runs? If professional baseball was some kind of pure and saintly organization it would be one thing but it is obviously not. They have no proof that Rose bet against his own team and I do not see anything wrong with betting on your team to win. Hell, professional fighters have bet on themselves a lot in the history of boxing, who has been banned there?

If Rose bet on his team to lose, for sure he should have been banned but betting on your team, to me, is just illustrative of the mind set of a guy who is super competitive and wants to win enough to bet money on it. Rose was one of the top 3-4 hitters in the history of the game. Put him in the HOF while he is still alive please. No player in my life was more fun to watch. :) :) :)

Exactly! No chance in hell Jordan would bet against himself. Would he bet against the Hornets? Possibly.

I would say an ultra competitive guy needed a new fix.

Rules change all the time and there are always exceptions.

Abortion, guns, Black empowerment, Pete Rose- it's uncanny how close the views of Nas and Trump actually are.
