Can someone explain to me how this works? Is the player decided upon, but not named yet? Is it just a future draft pick?

Sometimes, the player might be injured or something, and they have to wait until he gets off the IL before he can be traded or announced in a trade. That's one reason it's a player to be named later.

They make a list of players they can choose from. Gives them a little more time to do some additional scouting. I believe it's betwen Taylor Green and Lorenzo Cain in the Sabbathia deal.

670 "The SCORE's" Steve Stone mentioned on "Mully & Hanley" this morning that the "player to be named" is the Brewers' J.J. Hardy in the C.C. Sabathia trade. As far as I know, "players to be named" have to be on the 40 man roster, and "Stoney" thinks Hardy is the one headed to Progressive (Formerly Jacobs) Field, probably after the All-Star Break.

If the player to be named later has to be on the 40 man roster, then there have been a lot of deals done that have broken that rule. A lot of player to be named later turn out to be minor league guys.

So the Brewers are upgrading from a J.J. to a C.C.

Shark, all of your posts seem strangely "odd" to me. Not "odd" in a subjective way, but "odd" in a structural way.
Do you have an explanation for this "oddity"? I don't know if I can sleep until I have an explanation.
Please help me.

Really? Huh. Why would they have to wait for Hardy to be named? I just read that it's between Taylor Green and Michael Brantley. Hardy has been on the market but I would be shocked if he goes as part of this deal.

I think PTBNL have to occur within a year of the deal so if it was Hardy, it would happen after the season.
