This might be of interest to GD and RR - there's a new little place by Six Corners called Junebug Cafe. The entire menu is meat pies, gumbo, beignets, and coffee (Dark Matter, not chicory.)

my wife went yesterday to pick up some food for a mardi gras dinner

I really loved the gumbo

The meat pies sucked. They are, essentially, empanadas and not a very good version.

Gumbo is good enough for a return but ONLY for gumbo

Do they put a Hershey's Kiss in the gumbo?

I wish that were true because it’s close but the last 2 times we ate there we left disappointed. My daughter had to send her catfish sandwich back because it was fishy - which seems unusual for what was likely farm raised. Everyone else’s was just meh and it’s not particularly cheap.

I was there with my family last January and the food was very good. My sister and her husband lived near New Orleans for several years and he said the food was the best/most authentic Cajun food he has had since they lived in Louisiana.

Heaven on Seven is the gold standard for gumbo, but I've also heard good things about Maple Tree Inn in Homewood (just re-opened after a fire).

I'm a big fan of the MTI, but I'm a bit disappointed to see that it's been relocated to Homewood. I don't think that would have happened if Charlie (RIP) still owned the place.

A coworker brought in grocery store paczkis last night, variety filling. The glazed prune was great, sugared apple was okay. Free fat pills are hard to argue with!

It was disappointing once he had to shutter the 107th st spot in his divorce. The Blue Island spot never had the same flavor to me.

The Blue Island location was previously "The Lion's Head Ale House" - also owned by Charlie. It was one of my favorite spots for enjoying a wide selection of imported beer - long before they (and micro-brews) were commonly available.
