I finally made the time to listen to the North interview via podcast. For what it's worth..I thought it was fine and an interesting listen.

Towards the end, Mac offered North some un-solicited advice (listen more). In that vein...I offer this un-solicited advise to Mr. Mac.

Stop, or maybe slowdown on the "I've got money" card you seem to be playing lately. I listen during my 45 minute commute home, and in recent days/weeks I have heard about your 14 or 15 or 24 (does it matter) monitors in "Mackie Land" (sounds like Pappy Land)...and the high def tv's, and buying more high def screens...then yesterday the "I bought my dad a tv for Christmas"...then the other day there was some reference about you & remote broadcasts/contract obligation...and yes..."you gotta get paid"...etc..

I think we all know you are making significant coin. I do not begrudge you for that, and chase the almighty dollar myself. In his final days, North was getting ripped pretty good about being to full of himself, changing because of the money he made, for letting people know about it...and of course for having a shitty show.

You've been pretty solid in remaining "that guy" as you've climbed the ladder and become more successful. Don't get wrapped up with power or greed now that the North "thing" has played itself out. Get all the coin you can, but don't keep bringing it to the airwaves.

My un-solicited advice.

I agree, and I'll add a little more:

Like you said, we're all aware the guys are handsomely paid for their work and that there are many perks to the job. Given that, I get tired of hearing about all the (free or not) tickets, food, fences, roofs, cars, and everything else. It seems like there's a constant wrangling to get free stuff or to work in a sponsor's name as often as possible to ensure there's something on the doorstep every day when they get home.

I don't begrudge them for getting what they can get, I just don't need to hear about it umpteen times a day. It's like when Bernstein could never simply say "When I was in college..." or "At the school I went to...", it was always "When I was at Duke..." or "At Duke..."

I can't think of any other radio show I've listened to on a regular basis where the hosts are as guilty of this as MJH. Harry can barely utter a sentence without getting in a plug for someone/something.

The Harry one just got done complaining about the station not giving them free access to a suite.

I wonder what IRS will say about all the freebies? I think they consider it income.

Fair enough. I am aware of what you're suggesting. With your advice received well... A few points I believe worth noting.

* I pay what anybody else pays for White Sox tickets. I buy about a dozen four-packs a year. I bought all of my playoff tickets in '05 and do not expect anything for free.

* Like many suburban family guys, I drive an American-made SUV. I lease it and currently do not have a car deal. When I have had deals representing car dealerships, nothing was "free." I received a 1099 earnings statement and paid taxes based on the value of the vehicle. The only sponsor I represent right now is Allen Brothers, for which I get paid in both cash and product. I pay taxes on all of it, as I always have.

* Buying a television (46" Sony Bravia) for one's mom or did isn't really a statement of arrogance, is it? I think a lot of people my age (46) have done things for those who made their lives better once upon a time.

Thank you for the free advice. It is good advice.

I like how Mac's typist uses the * to delineate his points.

He must pay her well.

Pappys dead long live Mackie. Please don't placacte us like, most suburban guys are driving SUV"S most are trying to dump their gas guzzlers. The Allen Brothers steaks, most regular families are having a tough time with the cost of groceries and energy so come back to reality or you will wind up like Mike!

I'll grant you he is the worst at doing it, but its normally in a joking mater and is directly followed by the other 2 blurting out "COMP"...

Screw that!

I love hearing about the coin spent and freebies!

I think Mac should be an "Official Plasma TV tester"

Should have a tech segment!

. I have no issues with it either and most times find it funny. They are sitting in the cat bird seat with thier success and if they give a plug to a company who sent them stuff I have no problem with it.

Nascar , golfers, Poker players whore themselves out for goodies so why not these guys. Make all the money and friendships with whatever company wants to sell you out Mac.

Mackey is very generous with a lot of the free swag he gets. He has a number of us out at Woodbine for free golf with him , he shares the wealth with his co-workers and buddies and the fans of his show. I have known Mac for almost 15 years and he knows where he came from and is a very humble dude.

The show takes them to different parts of their lifes everyday and that what's special about those 3 and when they bust Harry's balls about coming from money, I find it funny and it's even funnier when Harry throws it back that Mac has a gazebo in his yard and lives in a ritzy area in Dyer. I 've been to Mac's house and he lives in a 1 bedroom trailor with Sherri so there is no truth to that as it's all part of the show.

I don't usually agree with Riles but there was a segment last week that made me cringe a little. He might have a point. There is a difference between plugging products and himself and making somebody else feel small for what they don't have or choose to buy.

To possibly bring this full circle (not circle jerk)..

- I think Mac "gets it"
- I assume he is generous
- I know he makes solid dough...and he should playing in the arena he is in.
- I do not always mind talk about perks & freebies & sponsors and the like..

My intent was a warning...or a caution. In my daily 45 minutes of listening, and a few podcasts from time to time, this was just something I noticed....and started to notice more often.

Tie that in with North stuff, and what I believe to be a "power void" now in sports radio...I just wanted to bring an awareness to it.

With power often comes corruptive thoughts or actions. I think with North out, Mac's power has increased. Just look at North as your model of how not to act.

My two cents.

Al Gore, Hypocrite!

Energy Guzzled by Al Gore’s Home in Past Year Could Power 232 U.S. Homes for a Month

Gore’s personal electricity consumption up 10%, despite “energy-efficient” home renovations

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

Maybe Al should take a step outside of his gigantic glass house and watch himself.

Maybe danny needs to watch himself a little bit in regards to being the next Richie Rich and letting everyone know about it , but in no way do I see him heading down the North path in regards to his wealth. I have small issues with Dan that DONT affect my listening but this AINT one of them.

Get that cash while you can though. That gravy train will end and he who has the most toys before they die wins.

The fact that Mac is able to come on here and read a little bit of constructive criticism without becoming defensive is one of the traits that make me like the guy. Mac has always remained a "regular Joe" and shown his listeners and callers to the show the respect they deserve for putting him at the top of Chicago sports radio. While Dan and Terry are both funny and knowledgeable, they come across all to often as elitists, always quick with name calling or an insult if one of their callers doesn't interpret their sports dogma as they feel they should. Would it really be so much to ask for Dan and Terry to get through an entire show without calling someone and idiot, genius, or ass clown? And while Mac has definitely had his moments and gone off on a caller or two or three over the years, for the most part he seems to remember where he comes from and is generally more accepting of the views of others without accusing them of riding the short bus to school.
With that in mind I have to agree with the OP on his general take that the MJH Show is beginning to sound a lot like the casual conversation heard around the yacht club - "Lovey, someone put a scratch in the Bently yesterday". While I understand that being the king of all you survey is heady stuff, I truly hope Mac, and his fleshy co-hosts, will resist the impulse to flaunt their good fortune while the rest of us normal folk are left staring down the barrel of a recession. If not, the ride at the top may be a short one.

the thing with money is...there's never ever enough of it...trust me...so who cares if Mac thinks he's rich and wants to make note of it often?

I could care less if Mac started burning $100 bills on the air. When he starts a segment called the Bookie Pastor or Night on the town with Slappy or saving dogs then we have a problem.

It's all minutia to me and if you asked me whose a bigger Pud when it comes to money and a name dropper and a pompus ass, I think Bernstein wins that race hands down and I like Bernstein. I don't think you get that from Mac and you guys need to go out and get a second job if your worried about what he has and you don't.

I don't think anyone who posted in this thread is saying that they are worried or concerned about who has what & or how much of it. The gist is...if you have that buddy who is constantly telling you about everything they have...it gets old real quick. If I were to respond to you and start telling you everything I have...or don't have...would you care? Hell no. No one really wants to hear that...and that is the only caution flag I was throwing out there. In some ways I understand this to be a fine line for MJH and they have to "go there" as it is a part of their work & their life.

Its all good!

Your using a blanket statement Walk as "YOU" don't like it but again I have no problem with it as I hang around with guys that have good cash flow and drive nice cars and pick up bar tabs. I think Mac brings things up sarcastically with Harry and so what if the guy has 5 HD flat screeens in his man-room..How does that bug you? Is Mac Bill Gates? No , Slappy has 5 tv's in his Hall of fame room and he doess't make nearly the coin Mac does but does that make him a pompus ass? No .. Just a douche on other levels. :D

Sounds like your just looking for something to bust balls on if you ask me. Will agree to disagree I guess.

Slappy doesn't do a show talking about it. Stu, you seem to be comparing apples to oranges and are missing the point. It is admirable that you constantly defend your friend, but in this case, I think you are wrong. These guys are just saying it seems over the top to them.

I'm not defending Mac SID. I'm giving my opinion that it does not bother me . I know what the point is and it's the fear Mac is getting to be like North and flaunting his success with comments on the air about his cash and jewels and cars and his free meat.

I will again state it's funny to me and it does not take away the entertainment factor of the show for me. Having said that , I have taken Mac and the show to the pommel horse pretty hard over the years and if I think he needs to be lit up and pounded for something , I'm right here for ya for a good beating on the show.

You and the rest of the Hitler youth here find the little things to pound folks here and that's cool because you guys have boring lifes but I can't help that, but you have gotten better and actual have had a few cogent thoughts the past few weeks.

You posts are starting to make sense to me lately. I'm beginning to worry that I might need therapy!!
Your point about Mac and North is pretty accurate and is one of the reasons I stoped listening, other than the main one of the unfunny one still on the show.

The arrogance, the constant idolizing 80's music groups, and the fake laughter over late 80's comedies instead of sports has lead me to XM. I do miss the show of a few years ago when sports was the main thing and these other extraneous things were occasional items of conversation. To me, they have gotten lazy, boring and predictable. None of which are very entertaining to me. I'm glad they are successful, but North was at one point in his career also. I happy for those who enjoy the show, but I no longer do.

I have no problem with Mac telling me about his TVs or "Maccyland" or whatever it is...I'd rather hear sports, but there's a time and place for going off track and Mac does a good job at judging when that should be. That's why I listen.
But YOU know Mac. You're defending what he says from a position that most of us don't have. I don't, nor do most of the listeners, have a personal relationship with any of the hosts. Your opinion is biased. That's fine. But the opinion of somebody outside of your circle is just as valid and, I'm guessing, just as important to MJH.
