Keep fighting the good fight, people. You'll eventually prove yourself right when you yourself don't die, or even get seriously sick.

In my day to day personal and work life, I'm down to 2 actual people that still think is some overblown, "30,000 people die from the flu every year" thing. That number has gone way down in the last week.....

I'm not sure of the upside of being one of the last holdouts to accepting science and medicine on something like this, but in a strange way...I admire your persistence.

It seems like we have more people finally realizing “holy shit, this virus is actually serious” since we started this specific discussion. Not only on this board, but in the world in general.

It’s not “the flu”. All of us should be doing our part to stop the spread of this as much as we can.

Nothing has changed. Everyone still believes that it's serious and that the response is stupid. Since your last visit even more actually believe that the response is stupid.

Some of the responses in this thread (and other threads) say otherwise. Again, because of your posting style, nobody actually knows if you actually believe anything you say, but I’ll try.

I’ve repeatedly seen posts that say something related to “just a flu” and “only the old people would die anyway”.

I’ve seen all of those repeatedly since I started the thread. But some opinions seem to have changed.
Have you not seen those?

As of an hour ago the state of IL has had 1,049 with 9 fatalities. I don't think we should be on lockdown. As far as I know our hospitals aren't overwhelmed.

And I'm not willing to give up any of my rights, money, or anything else over it.

I’ve never personally known anybody in my district or nearby hospital with AIDS, Ebola, Spanish flu, the plague.....but I trust the science and medicine that says those epidemics were serious and that drastic changes in lifestyles and habits had to be made, by most of the population, in order to curb those diseases.

There was a teacher at my HS that used a wheelchair because of polio when he was kid...luckily I got a vaccine for that as a youth.

All those exist or existed and nobody shut down worldwide operations because of it. If you think shutting everything down for 1,049 with 9 fatalities in a state of almost 13M fine. I disagree.

You've never known anybody with AIDS?

As far as the total numbers go, what do you think they will look like 1 week from tonight?
Just an opinion. You are a super smart person, so let’s make some educated guesses about how many cases there will be by next Sunday night in the state of Illinois?

I’ll let you set the over/under

(I’m using this as an example, not necessarily picking on you)

I’ve seen this a lot too. Yes, the stock market is tumbling, and I can’t personally buy a polo for work at Kohl’s (but I can online!)...

Go to jewel tomorrow for food for your family.
Go to BP for gas for your car.
Go to Walgreens for some makeup or Pepto.
Go to Starbucks for a latte.

All are available. People blame the media for “creating panic for a flu!”....
But all of these are available. This is the panic that doesn’t need to exist.

at what point would it be appropriate to institute the stay home order? how many cases would you need to see before you go nuclear like the entire civilized world has already gone?

wait until 10k or 20k+ of illinois infections...? at that point you may have already lost since this stupid thing is so contagious. it would have been great if some of these talking heads either at the state or local level would do a deep dive showing the math on how they came to the decisions they are making. contrary to nazitrump's character breaking anger....I think this sucks big time, but if the experts say action is needed im not going to ignore them on a whim.

i also am confused as to the economic arguments. we were fucked no matter what. can someone outline the alternate reality where limited precautions were put in place and the economy doesnt take a shit (albeit a slower one) and consider the fact that perhaps by not going nuclear you made the illiness 10x worse?.

in a few weeks it likely will be clear whether this was all worth it or not, we're still too early

How much did you pay for a fucking dish of curried goat on your layover in Delhi, while waiting for your $29 return flight to Manila?

We gotta know.

I'm personally (probably) going to go unaffected household wise. My husband's job shouldn't be an issue but our retirement and investments will take a hit. We can recover or figure it out, it's fine. I don't think society should collapse or the government should take over. If 110K people die of 13M and if 1M people get sick they get sick. We cannot stay in our houses for 9 months or 6 weeks and then be told to go back inside whenever they deem it's necessary.

I don't think I've seen anyone say "it's the flu" in about a month.

You're right, I tend to blend real with trolling a lot. I keep thinking after 15 years most people should have a great idea what's real and what's exaggerated or what's completely bullshit. For the most part, I think most people get it. I haven't really fucked around with this. Especially over the past few days.

I don't want people to die regardless of if they're old or young. I imagine that my own son may even be at risk because of the "tune up" he had a couple of years ago. Based on what I've heard and seen, this virus potentially collapsing our society because of our extreme measures doesn't seem reasonable. I doubt that belief changes unless they've been lying to us.

Our country is being run by scientists. I'm not exactly comfortable with that.

The rules change every year (and woooo buddy, get ready for this) - but I never sweat it enough to think my life (and possibly 7 million others) is gonna end this summer because of it.

1) As long as "they" are keeping supply chains going we're okay. What happens when that stops? I have enough food for a couple weeks but then what? The government will help me or protect me?
2) You went to Menards. Good. for an outing. Are you spending as you would have? I can't even spend what I would have wanted to in the last few weeks. These orders are bullshit.
3)don't know. 1M and 100k dead? Mon Dieu!
4) You'll get like 300k for nothing in 10 years. They don't care.

I don’t agree wit this. And as I said before, you don’t agree with half the stuff you post either.
But it begs the question, what single profession would you rather have run the country?

If scientists ran this thing, we would have taken drastic measures WAY earlier.

In reverse order:

4. I won’t get anything for “nothing” and I don’t have any idea how you got those numbers. I have no clue on my own numbers. I’ve paid a large amount into TRS every single paycheck for 22 years....
3. I thought you were actually trying to have a serous conversation. But....
2. I actually overspent. I knew that I’d have plenty of time to do some painting and other HI projects.
1. The reality of “what happens of the supply chain ends” has existed.....forever. Whether or not affluent suburbanites hoarded TP or not.

You are in a unique position. Your retirement is guaranteed sort of mostly. You'll be fine.

Paint was way up this week. It made me laugh. My husband painted my son's room finally. You guys have no more excuses. Or hire somebody.
