Bear fans, while Rex Grossman & Kyle Orton are supposed to be battling for the #1 job in training camp later this month, there is a rumor in Hub Arkush's Pro Football Weekly suggesting that the Bears may be interested in lefty Chris Simms as a potential new #3 quarterback. Simms has reportedly come all the way back from a ruptured spleen and has been miffed at Tampa Bay Buccaneers' head coach Jon Gruden & GM Bruce Allen for "unfair treatment". The son of former New York Giant & current CBS Sports' analyst Phil Simms does have competition for his services, as PFW reports the division rival Detroit Lions & Dallas Cowboys have also expressed interest in Chris as a potential backup. Regardless of what happens, all indications appear to have Simms battling for a job in someone else's training camp later this month. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Brad Johnson still the #1 backup to Tony Romo in Dallas?

Bring him in and let him compete if the price is right.

The Bears do have 2 no-names that they signed as free agents, but the names escape me at the moment. They signed them right after the NFL Draft when the Bears "passed" on drafting one in the later rounds...

Even though I believe Rex is on the fast track to Canton, I still think the Bears should try out as many QBs as possible.

Simms seems to be similar potential ceilings as KO & Rex. So I say pass. I think if lightening strikes and we end up with an elite QB it will be with a Rookie we develop and happens to step up at the right time ala Brady and Romo. I can't really remember a journeyman type QB make the jump to elite level.

Simms would probably start off as the #3 QB in Chicago, and would probably have a better chance at becoming a #2 backup elsewhere.

Who gives a shit about #3 when the two guys going for #1 wouldn't be starting anywhere except maybe Minnesota.

I sure hope they don't sign him. Ever since college I haven't like Simms. Major Applewhite got screwed.

Just for the record, I'm not exactly crazy about the third string quarterback either. Given the Bears' lack of success with QBs over the years, it wouldn't shock me if Chris Simms or anyone else got a chance to run this stinker of an offense if Rex Grossman & Kyle Orton end up in bodybags like on "CSI:" with the offensive line in shambles!

Brad Smith former Mizzou QB, with 4.5 speed and has the ability to throw deep passes. Not the most accurate on short passes to the flat, but a great playmaker with his feet.

true.. Orton and Grossman might be more of a Leftwich type. Out of the league.

Unfortunately he's been a WR since he came in the league and was never known to be a great pocket QB.
