I've been listening to Ritchie a lot lately and what he did with Rainbow. I wrote on another thread that he deserves to be in the top 5 of all time. Maybe that's being too kind. On one list I found him at 10, which is probably fair, though there are couple of guys I would put him ahead of, like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Slash and David Gilmore. David Gilmore was probably a better composer, but I'm not sure a better guitarist. I've listened to some of Rainbow's recordings from their '76 European tour, and I ask myself how is it even possible for him to play notes in such a flurry, but with absolute precision. His dexterity is on par with Jimmy Page, maybe he even exceeds him, which is saying a hell of a lot.

Anyway, just curious is there were some more Rainbow and Ritchie fans out there and where you would rank him.

His dexterity greatly exceeds Page. Page is a lot of things great....but clean dexterity doesn't come to mind. In other words...Page was pretty fucking sloppy guitarist in most live settings.

You say this every time Jimmy Page's name comes up. In his latter career he was incredibly sloppy. Listen to early Page, 1968 through about 1972. Few on the planet ever played better than that in concert.

It's a toss up between Shabba Ranks and Ritchie German.

Shabba wins by a nose.

I love it when old people who don't know any music outside of 70's rock try to rank guitarists.

He's not even in the top 100 and no one who knows anything about music would put him ahead of SRV.

You don't know shit about music and all your threads on the subject fucking suck.

I got booted from Alice Cooperstown for refusing to pay $35 to see Jimmy Vaughn. I think I went on a pretty solid rant.

Jimmy fucking Vaughn!

Great tone, good showman, but ultimately another Albert King ripoff artist like Eric Clapton.

SRV was great, but he wasn't the pioneer everyone likes to think he is. He was a very skilled, technically proficient Hendrix disciple. Not a bad thing, but the more live Hendrix stuff I encountered, the lesser I thought of SRV.

I know I'll get blasted for saying something less than complimentary of SRV...have at it.

Blackmore is in the top 100, but not in my top 10.

I just don't get what was so special about Stevie Ray Vaughn. There are a thousand guys in Chicago that can regurgitate old blues licks just like he did. And there are some- like Melvin Taylor- who are more technically proficient.

SRV had great tone, was a great showman, and what really helped him and doesn't get mentioned enough....he had a great VOICE.

He was an Albert King disciple and readily admitted it.

Albert King was spectacular.

Really? You speak like someone who's never played guitar. I've been playing for 28 years and say he's easily one of the top ten greatest guitarists of all time.

Here's a couple of guys who know what they're talking about, unlike you.

This is the song that Eddie was playing the riff to, Space Truckin.

I'm not even a big Deep Purple fan, but this song is bad ass. Very catchy.

Sick version of 20th Century of Greensleeves.

Other than Page in his prime, this is the best guitar work I've ever heard. Blackmore goes from playing a pure classical piece to one of the most crushing metal songs ever.

And then you have Dio's vocals on top of everything. Amazing song.

Didnt they try to collect the cash after you were already seated, with drink in hand?

Yeah, not my thing.

Doesn't hold a candle to SRV.

Heard “Burn” on the way home from work tonight. That right there is a Blackmore tour de force.
