Too much close contact. I can’t imagine things are contained by August.

How does the players union handle a confirmed case in the locker room. Unless testing is instantaneous and fail proof by then.

Let me see when baseball happens and we can go from there.

It all depends on what MLB does. If the MLB season starts back up, there will be football. The NBA and NHL might as well call it a day though.

The only way it would make sense for the NBA and NHL would be to go almost straight into the playoffs. Maybe have like three games as kind of warm up. The first two series of should also be best at 5, not 7.

Otherwise they will be playing basketball until Labor Day, have barely a month off, then the season will start again.

Kirk Herbstreit agrees with you!

Honestly at the rate things are going i'd be surprised to see football with fans in the stadiums. To pull off major sports they'd have to allow assembly/travel for certain groups of ppl, and these days they're in the taking away Dept!

And it's all your fault, goyim!

They are going to cancel the NBA playoffs, you can sense it.

I don’t think they will. My guess is they will start the playoffs around June 1st or maybe late May. But I’d say it’s a 50/50 call right now. Silver wants to cancel the season I’m pretty sure but it will be tough to fight the 30 billionaire owners who don’t. Already reports of that conflict going on.

Fact is the NBA will get more notoriety for cancelling the playoffs than they would having the playoffs.

The NFL on the other hand...

They are going to play these games. They will play them in Australia or Africa or Alaska or the Canadian Yukon. And they will have plenty of drunk fans filling the seats.

You’re not thinking of the 30 billionaire owners in this analysis. They don’t care much about being woke and will want a return on their investment sooner than later.

There was a report the other day ESPN and TNT are still sending them TV rights checks and are asking when they will get their money back.

Money will talk, wokeness will walk, at the end of the day.

People have been saying "go woke, go broke" for a long time and it hasn't materialized. Some organisations, like the NFL, clearly wont bow to any sort of pressure. They're gonna hold this draft in a few weeks and not give a shit.

The NBA on the other hand is massively image conscious and the owners all bought franchises for fun. The guys in it for the money no longer form the majority voice.

That’s just wrong. Nobody who has a billion dollars doesn’t care about losing money. This is a universal truth that goes back centuries.

I have seen countless businesses throw away money to woo the internet mob. It is a bizarre function of our times.

I agree that Silver wants to cash-in on the virtue of cancelling the postseason right now and there is pushback from the owners. Mainly because they know how quickly public opinion will turn to the players needing to be paid their full salaries to do absolutely nothing. The owners probably want to wait and see as long as they can.

From what I have read every owner is pushing hard to finish the season and Silver ultimately works for them, not the Twitter crowd.

And while I know Silver is susceptible to left politics of PR I also genuinely believe he’s a pretty bright dude and not going to cancel the season over this unless it’s more catastrophic than you and I and the data suggests it is right now.

We’ll see.

As an aside, I’ve always thought the baseball season was too long by half. It would be fun as hell to see a 3-4 month 80-90 game season.

I thought a problem with NBA ownership is that owners increasingly don't own the teams for fun the way Jerry Buss and Donald Sterling did, that they're all hedge fund guys trying to maximize their investments. Not that there aren't positives; the Bucks would still be an 11th place team in the Bradley Center if they were just an excuse for Herb Kohl to sneak a peek at Glenn Robinson's hog.

I think an 81 game season could be really fun. Scale down the schedule to only division opponents and may the best team win the race to the playoffs.

That would rule. Especially if it coincided with an NBA playoff run

Playing only division games until the playoffs would be fucking hilarious and I'm all for it.

A lot will change by August - that's probably enough time for more a treatment to the virus. Testing will only take minutes within the next week or so with the latest developments. I think the league will have to deal with players getting sick, but am optimistic that society can begin to have some normalcy. April will be a rough month though for the country.

If they finish the NBA and NHL seasons this year, I am guessing it will be without any fans in the stands. They are still doing live WWF Smackdown shows without any fans, its kinda creepy.

I think the big problem will be anyone who has a pre-existing complicating condition that does not want to play for the risk of contracting the virus. It would have to be a big name guy -- like if Cutler said because of the diabetes he didn't want to play. How do teams deal with that? Brian Hoyer plays for the year? Does Cutler get paid at all? They can't force him to play because how bad would that look to the public. Anyone who had offseason surgery could be in the same boat; their immune system isn't up to usual levels. We will have to see what things look like by then, but it is a greater than 0% chance that the NFL schedule is affected. Of all the leagues, this hit at the best time for them, so we'll see what happens.

Gonna be a lot of domestic violence with no football. If the Saints won't be using the Superdome, we'll have to turn it into America's largest battered women's shelter.

This is literally being proven wrong each day as we type here....

They've (chosen) to lose money.
They're currently losing money.
They're gonna lose more money tomorrow and going forward.
Again, no government in our country "forced" any sports league to halt operations on this. They chose to. All of them. They're all billionaires.

So when will they start back up again? Who knows?
If we operate under the basic assumption that most leagues want their 20/21 season to start on time....I agree, NHL and NBA are probably not gonna play again this season. If they want to condense next season in order to get something in for this current season, then, well, idk. That seems unrealistic.

Its simply intolerable for the USA to not have football for a year. The political will to have both pro and college seasons is immense, I wasn't kidding when I said they'll play the games overseas if they have to.

In a best case scenario, they aren't able to resume until sometime in June. Would they still have a regular playoff starting then or trim it to shorter series, etc?
