Just reminded me of a picture of me and my grandfather from when I was a toddler. I doubt he ever showed any emotion, but he was there for anything important to me.

And wanted me to sit with him and watch Alabama football as he was painfully dying from cancer. And was still working to toughen me up. I'm not tough enough anymore.

My grandfather was quite the man.. he was an asshole, don’t get me wrong but the life story is something and I think, in His own way, he loved his family. I bonded a lot with him in his last 5 years. I wish we could of started 30 years earlier

I thought the exact same thing.

I honestly got sick after his funeral and didn't recover enough to stand up until the last people left my parents house after the repast.

This page has been excellent reading, thank you all.

I just got off the phone with my godmother in Memphis. 78 years old and telling me repeatedly that she loves me the same way I love her.

My heart is full and I needed it.

Thanks for sharing that. I smiled.

When my grandfather passed my dad asked me if I wanted anything from the estate. I wanted three things. 1) the 20 gauge Parker shot gun that he took me hunting with when I was 13. It was the one one time I had “fun” with him as a child. I like. 2) the grandfather clock that rung every hour in his old Pennsylvania farm house he lived in. Helped keep track of the hours I froze my ass off during thanksgiving as there were no blankets in the guest room. 3) the skull he had in his office with a cigarette in the mouth as it showed he had a sense of humor. I got 2/3 but my. Rather has the skull so that’s all good.

My grandfather ran cattle here at the farm with me. I remember telling him he didn’t make mich money this year and him responding that it didn’t matter, he had a couple nickels to rub together and we got to talk and learn... it meant the world.

Yeah, that's the stuff that's meaningful, that stays with you. The only memories as powerful are trauma and the first time a woman you liked made it clear that she liked you. Everything else falls away.

I must have sung this a million times trying to get my daughter to sleep

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh, why can't I?

My dad sang to me too.

Go the fuck, the fuck to sleep
Go the fuck to sleep, little shit head
Go fuck yourself now
Fuck yourself now
Go the fucking fucking fuck to sleep

Haven't gotten laid
In 5 years
Cause you wont fucking sleep.

Close the shade
I drank 10 beers
Now count some fucking sheep

I've said this to you in person, but I feel the need to tell you here that I love you my brother.

You were there for me when I was at my deepest, darkest hour. And I have faith in large part because you were a mensch.

Thank you.

Well it is a bit of a downer without the pomp and circumstance and under stay at home order but it doesn’t change how proud this dad is today. My beautiful daughter graduated and earned her Pitt BS in Biochemistry with honors. Hooray!
